EXECUTIVE SPOTLIGHT

Michael Kaczenski
President and CEO
Sun East Federal Credit Union

Q: What led you to the credit union

sector, and to Sun East Federal
Credit Union?

A: I studied business management and

marketing in college, and we were required
to complete a six-month internship. I
interned at Sun East Federal Credit Union
as a teller and thought it would just be a
way to fulfill my graduation requirement,
but they introduced me to a veteran in
the industry who became a mentor. She
taught me about the history and mission
of the credit union and how every member
is your boss. I was hooked. I was lucky
enough to be hired at Sun East after graduation in 1989 and have been here ever
since, becoming CEO in 2001.

Q: What's your leadership style? How
do you lead an engaged team?

A: I was the 17th employee hired at this

credit union; over the years I've held just
about every position here. So, I always
lead by not forgetting what it was like to
be in everyone else's shoes. I'm also not
afraid to make mistakes or try new things,
and be willing to throw out an idea and
have that idea changed and implemented
in an even better way than when it was
first brought up.

Q: Why is community service
important to you?

A: To me, it's all about giving back to

others, but I think it goes beyond that,

56

too. A lot of people still don't really
understand what a credit union is, so by
getting out into the community we can
show people that we care about the communities and the individuals we serve.
A big portion of our employees' annual
performance evaluations includes their
involvement both in the community in
which we live and in the credit union
community, serving on a board or
a council.

Q: What has the coronavirus

pandemic revealed to you about Sun
East's strengths and challenges?

A: Our biggest strength is the character of
the people who work in the organization.

No disaster plan could have prepared
us for what this is and what we did. We
were thrown not just one curveball but
endless curveballs, and the people on
the management team worked tirelessly
to put new systems and protocols in
place. In a matter of a week, we went
from having everyone in the office to
almost 80 percent of our back-office
staff working remotely.
Our biggest challenge is getting more
members to use our online services.
We have all the necessary remote
banking services, but we still have
many members who prefer to bank
in person and are still coming to use

the drive-thru at our branches. I hate
to see members waiting in line just to
deposit a check.

Q: What will it look like to

successfully come through this?

A: We made a commitment that we
weren't going to furlough or lay off
any employee through this crisis.
And I know the employees appreciate
that; many of them have significant
others who've lost their jobs, so we
are the employer that's keeping their
family going through all this. From
a business standpoint, a lot of the
different loan products have dropped
off some, but business lending and
mortgages have stayed strong. The
big question is, how quickly can
those millions of people who are
unemployed get back to work?
Q: What advice do you have for
other executives also trying to
lead their teams through this
unprecedented crisis?

A: Be compassionate. Lead with your

heart. And imagine that you're the member who just lost their job. With those
three things in your mind, you can't go
wrong with any decision you make as you
go through this.
