The NAFCU Journal March-April 2020 - 40

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

NAFCU Fights for YOU
B. Dan Berger, President and CEO of NAFCU

S

ince 2013, NAFCU has seen
tremendous growth: Our
membership has increased
more than 40 percent. Credit
union leaders often ask me, "How does
NAFCU do it? What is the secret behind
the association's growth strategy?"

The answer is clear: NAFCU fights for
YOU. The NAFCU board takes positions
on key policy issues that matter to you
and your members, and then our advocacy teams goes to work.
From working to streamline regulations,
to ensuring credit unions' voices and
concerns are heard by the NCUA, to
fighting back against meritless banker
attacks, NAFCU is always here as your
Washington Watchdog.
In pursuit of this mission, NAFCU is
leading the charge - and has been for
years - for a national data privacy standard to ensure credit unions benefit from

a uniform compliance regime and fully
protect members' privacy.
Earlier this year, the California Consumer
Privacy Act (CCPA) went into effect, and
its passage was intended to better protect
consumers' privacy. However, unlike a
traditional state law, the CCPA has the
potential to impact businesses - including credit unions - that are based in
other states. Yes, you heard that right: The
law applies to any company that meets
a certain threshold for interacting with
California state residents.
While it is imperative that we fully protect consumers' privacy, we are headed in
a direction that could lead to a patchwork of 50 state privacy laws as other
states actively look to enact their own
data privacy initiatives. In the event that
each state passed separate, and potentially competing, data privacy laws, the
resulting dynamic would prove unworkable for businesses and consumers.
While granting consumers more control
over their personal data and privacy
settings is a great thing, it must be done
in such a way that it is feasible for credit

40

unions to continue to operate without
passing tremendous costs and confusion
on to their members.
In our monitoring of the law, NAFCU
proactively published a data privacy
white paper to distribute to key Washington policymakers. We also developed
a bold advocacy strategy on Capitol Hill
to better inform legislators of the need
for a national data privacy policy.
As your Washington Watchdog, NAFCU
will advocate on your behalf. We will
drive change in Washington. We will
ensure credit unions' growth and ability
to better serve members.
So when credit union leaders ask me what
is the secret behind NAFCU's growth, the
answer is really very simple: We proactively and tirelessly advocate for policies
beneficial to our cooperative industry.
That's our key to success. Because to us,
it's personal.
