WASHINGTON AND INDUSTRY BRIEFS

Preparing for the 2020
Presidential Election

W

ith a presidential election
in sight, it's important for
credit unions to understand how to get involved,
when to take action and what to expect
in the coming months.

As the industry's Washington Watchdog,
NAFCU has established strong relationships with members of Congress who
recognize that credit unions play a large
role in their communities. To bolster the
association's advocacy efforts, NAFCU
encourages credit union leaders to
develop a relationship with their lawmakers, too.

How to Get Involved

Take advantage of NAFCU's grassroots
advocacy. The association's Grassroots
Action Center provides credit unions
with contact information to set up local
meetings, background information on

important issues and the tools needed to
take action.
Research your state's election laws. Use
resources such as social media and your
state's secretary of state website to find
valuable information about what to expect
in the coming election season, including
voter registration deadlines, primaries
and early voting periods.
Reach out to schedule a meeting with
your representative and senators. In
addition to NAFCU's Grassroots Action
Center, use lawmakers' individual websites to find local office information, or
contact their Washington, D.C., offices.
Communicate with lawmakers when an
issue arises in Congress that may affect
your credit union, community and members. Be active in your community by
using social media and websites to learn
about upcoming events, such as town

halls and rallies. Be sure to follow up
after meetings or other outreach efforts
to express your gratitude and ensure
future contact.

Our Policy Priorities

Not all legislation Congress passes will
impact the credit union industry; however, there is important legislative work
being done at the committee level that,
once developed, will become the baseline
for any future work on the issues.
NAFCU's No. 1 advocacy priority is
to ensure credit unions' continued
growth. As such, NAFCU maintains
its bold approach to advocacy, and it
will support credit union champions in
Congress who recognize the good work
credit unions do in their communities
and take up issues to ensure a regulatory
environment that allows our industry
to thrive. Here are some of the issues
