FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

2020 Advocacy: Bold and Personal
B. Dan Berger, President and CEO of NAFCU

A

s NAFCU's president and
CEO, advocating on your
behalf is my passion. I believe
in the good work credit
unions do every day to help their local
communities. But the part that excites
me the most about our cooperative
industry is my conversations with you.
There is nothing more valuable than
hearing from those NAFCU serves, especially about ways we can serve you better.
What we have heard from you is a desire
for a bold federal advocate, one that fights
for credit unions and is forward-thinking.
We at NAFCU agree, and we are ready to
take on that charge.

As your Washington Watchdog, we are
leading efforts on key issues, such as data
privacy, exam modernization and field
of membership (FOM) reform, to ensure
credit unions are positioned to grow and
thrive well into the future.
In addition, the coronavirus pandemic
has posed serious challenges for our
nation and industry. Credit unions
- lifelines within your communities -
have stepped up to support members

and small businesses during this trying
time, and NAFCU will continue to be
here, advocating for the guidance and
relief you need to get through this.

Reforming Data Privacy Laws

With the California Consumer Privacy
Act taking effect this year, NAFCU is
leading the call for a national data privacy standard to ensure credit unions do
not have to contend with a patchwork of
50 differing state privacy laws.
In working directly with members,
NAFCU is warning lawmakers that a lack
of a national standard will lead to hefty
compliance costs and threats of lawsuits
for credit unions. More so, we make sure
your voice is heard and that the industry
has a seat at the table whenever Congress
considers comprehensive reform.

Modernizing Your NCUA Exam

Modernizing the NCUA examination
process is exactly the type of change we
are fighting for here at NAFCU. While
the NCUA has made significant strides
in updating the exam process, we will
continue to advocate for more streamlining and reductions in the regulatory
burdens placed on credit unions.
One of NAFCU's top 2020 priorities is
greater transparency at the NCUA, and
it is important that credit unions benefit
from a transparent and fair exam process.

Helping You Grow Stronger

The ability to grow and compete in a
21st-century economy is a priority for
our cooperative industry. You need to
keep pace with new regulations and
technologies, all while providing the best
financial services to your members.
44

You also need an association that acts
with urgency and listens to you every
step of the way. To this end, we are
advocating for the NCUA to interpret its
FOM rules in a way that allows for your
credit union to be flexible in meeting the
needs of your members.

Recovering From Coronavirus

As Congress and regulators work to
protect consumers and industries from
the pandemic's negative toll, NAFCU
has been on the front lines working with
decision-makers to ensure credit unions'
needs are also addressed. From exam
relief to relaxed reporting requirements
and flexibility to allow you to provide
financial products and services to members impacted, we will continue to fight
to support your own recovery efforts.
We know that this pandemic has put
a strain on resources. So as you stay
committed to your mission of serving
members, we will do all we can to keep
you financially safe and stable as well.
Since the very beginning, our focus has
been about credit unions, from the bold
policy positions taken by the NAFCU
board of directors to our relentless
staff meeting daily with regulators and
members of Congress. As always, we are
committed to delivering results for you.
Because to us, it's personal.
Thanks to your support, our association
membership has increased by 40 percent
since 2013. We appreciate the trust you
place in us to advocate on your behalf!
