Walsh says. "They're looking for education about that process."

Securian also has introduced popular
software tools that help people examine
their overall financial wellness, he says. 

Like many educational opportunities
this year, MHV's offerings are being
delivered online, which allows members
to consume them at their own pace.
However, the credit union is hoping
portions may be available in person
by fall, Walsh says. And it is keeping a
finger on the pulse of its membership
as their needs evolve; the credit union
routinely surveys its members.

For many credit unions, the pandemic
has been a time for delivering some
immediate help. In addition to its boot
camp on money management in a crisis,
MHV has been crafting webinars on
creating a standout résumé and acing a
job interview. "We are partnering with
a résumé expert to bring these two educational opportunities to our members
because many of them are having to
look for employment for the first time in
years," Walsh says. "We know that having
stable employment leads to financial
stability, which is why we felt these two
topics worked really well and would be a
relevant offering."
The credit union also has seen rising
interest in programs for first-time homebuyers, which can generate leads for
mortgage lenders. "People with income

and pivot quickly as we learn and create
new educational opportunities for members that help them navigate whatever it
is that they're facing," she says.
Credit unions themselves face a challenge this fall in delivering financial
education in the classroom, a staple of
many credit union schedules.
At Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union,
one of the most popular children's programs is one the credit union developed

in partnership with the popular book
franchise The Berenstain Bears, which
reaches children up to age 11. More
than a dozen credit unions nationwide now offer the program, says Rick
Durante, vice president and director
of corporate social responsibility and
government affairs at Franklin Mint.
Based in Chadds Ford, Pa., it has more
than 100,000 members and about $1.2
billion in assets. 
The program involves a field trip to a
"Bear Country" credit union. But field
trips may be few and far between during
the 2020-21 school year. In the interim,
Franklin Mint has been developing worksheets and other activities that students
can download and complete at home. 
"It's a whole new world, so to speak,"
Durante says. "We'll have to adapt to that
and find alternative methods to reach
and teach children about financial literacy. It's still going to be important. It's
just a matter of how we do it."
