Each employee's plan depends on what the
employee wants out of their future career. I can't tell
you what your development plan looks like. I can't tell
you what you want to be in the future. That has to
come from you. Some individuals are very content in
what they're already doing. That doesn't mean those
people aren't part of the discussion. In those situations,
talent optimization focuses on helping them to be more
effective in their existing job.

Cultivating Leaders

Sandra Holzgen, vice president of
human resources at PSECU, headquartered in Harrisburg, Pa., says some of
the best future leaders are those who are
not only successful in their own role and
committed to their own development.
"They're committed to developing others,"
she says. "They mentor."
In addition, effective leaders don't settle
for a silo mentality. They are curious
about the entire organization and are
willing to handle a variety of projects.
"They're engaged, positive and have a
broad view about their approach and
decision-making," Holzgen says.
"They ask more questions than the
average employee. They influence
and inspire others. They take
on additional responsibilities.
They are servant leaders,
exhibiting a high degree
of emotional intelligence

says, "they're the ultimate team player."
Team players don't necessarily rise neatly
through an organization's hierarchy.
They may come from a range of levels
and positions. When determining how
best to develop internal talent for future
leadership positions, it makes sense to
take a comprehensive approach.
