MITA

I Am NEMA/MITA

Leaving Home

M

y retirement from
Siemens Healthineers
this year has led me to reflect
on my activities within the
medical imaging industry
and in particular with MITA,
where I have made good
memories and many friends.

While I have learned much in
the industry, my work with
MITA has provided a different type of experience,
one that has been quite rewarding and fun. My
involvement provided me the opportunity to
ensure that my company's interests in regulations,
standards, guidance, and legislation were met.
When I think of the topics I've had the opportunity
to influence, I am proud to remember the diversity
of issues, many positive outcomes, and cases in
which we are still an active influence.

Hans Beinke, Siemens

While I had the opportunity to work with several
trade associations, for me MITA is home. It has
given me the opportunity to focus on the topics
that most influence the future of our products. I
feel blessed by MITA and other industry people I've
met. They are energetic and talented. With them, I
have done good things for our industry as a whole.
Like many organizations, a core group of
individuals frequently provides time and expertise.
While it is great to have these people always at
the ready, we need more participants and their
expertise. If you have not yet actively participated in
MITA topics, I encourage you to do so.
I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to play
a role in influencing the growth of the industry and
improving a portion of the healthcare system. ei

Small Manufacturers Value Membership
Jim Relph, Regulatory Affairs Manager, Digirad
Information and knowledge are power, and MITA
membership provides companies large and small with
access to information that is targeted to the medical
imaging industry. Over the past 12 years, Digirad, a
small company, has found tremendous value in MITA
membership, especially for regulatory issues.

Inadequate or inappropriate service can lead to image
quality issues, patient safety problems, and operator
risk. Companies of all sizes find value in contributing
to the overall industry solution. Our perspective helps
ensure that MITA's position and strategic plan reflect
the challenges that may be unique to small companies.

Learning about regulatory dockets and providing
input on an industry response allows companies to
participate in the regulatory process and to keep up
with the ever-changing regulatory environment. Our
participation in the Molecular Imaging Section, for
example, allows us to work with other companies in the
nuclear medicine field to address technical, regulatory,
and other issues that our industry is facing.

A small company's issues may not be the same as
those of a larger one, but they are equally important
to the association. Participating in regular discussions
with medical imaging industry peers provides the
opportunity to learn from one another's experiences
and challenges.

One topic MITA has taken on that is particularly
important for the entire medical imaging industry,
especially small companies, is the issue of third-party
service. The lack of regulatory oversight for companies
that service and maintain medical imaging equipment
directly impacts our businesses and should be a
concern for everyone.

Finally, small companies' positions matter to the
association. Our challenges and opinions are taken into
account as MITA develops comment letters, positions,
on important regulatory issues and strategic plans.
As the medical imaging industry continues to innovate
and to face challenges in the regulatory, technical, and
legislative arenas, having an organization like MITA
as our representative to regulators and legislators
is extremely valuable as we build consensus on
technical issues. ei
