Pathlight Summer 2016 - (Page 6)

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Letter from the Board Chair I f Aristotle was correct when he wrote, "Change in all things is sweet," then 2016 is a pretty sweet year. This is a season of exciting change and transition for PHA. We have just begun our second quarter century. From humble beginnings around a kitchen table 25 years ago, PHA has grown into a worldwide, organized fight against pulmonary hypertension that has achieved what its founders might have thought impossible. I think the crowning achievement of our first 25 years is the PH Care Centers program together with the PHA Registry. Read an update about the Registry on page 27 in this issue of Pathlight. It will be interesting to see what the next 25 years hold for these two important initiatives, but I will boldly predict that when we celebrate PHA's 50th anniversary, we will look back and see that they were the most significant steps we ever took in terms of improving care and moving closer to a cure. Another change is that, as of the last day of PHA's 2016 International PH Conference and Scientific Sessions, we have a new Chair of the Board of Trustees - Roger Towle. Roger has been a key contributor to many Board activities over many years, including his past role as Treasurer, chairmanship of both the Finance Committee and Investment Committee and service on several others. Most recently, Roger led the yearlong process of finding a new President & CEO for PHA in his capacity as Chair of the Search Committee. He is a wise and thoughtful leader who is held in high esteem by his fellow Board members. All of us in the PHA community are fortunate to have him at the helm. And, of course, 2016 is a year of profound change in executive leadership for PHA. As we thank and honor Rino Aldrighetti for his amazingly productive tenure as PHA's first President & CEO, we welcome Brad A. Wong as his successor. The hiring of Brad as our new CEO culminated a yearlong process that involved our search firm, Association Strategies, Inc. of Alexandria, Va., reaching out to more than 200 people, screening and interviewing more than 50 potential candidates, and presenting 11 highly qualified individuals to the Search Committee. From those 11, five people were chosen for interviews and two finalists were selected for a second round of face-to-face interviews by the Search Committee. An extensive background check was done on both finalists before a final selection was made. There could not have been a more complete or thorough process, and I am confident that we have hired the absolute best person to lead our organization forward. I am confident you will enjoy getting to know and working with Brad. I invite you to join me in welcoming him into our PHA family and in offering him our support. 6 PATHLIGHT // SUMMER 2016 From humble beginnings around a kitchen table 25 years ago, PHA has grown into a worldwide, organized fight against pulmonary hypertension that has achieved what its founders might have thought impossible. You can read more about him and see photos from PHA's Conference at which we honored Rino and welcomed Brad on pages 38-39. As I pass on the gavel to Roger Towle, I want to thank everyone in the PHA community for granting me the incredible honor of serving as Board Chair these last two years. In that role, I have made many new friends around the country and have been given opportunities to see firsthand the many ways that members of our community do what they can, however they can, to extend and improve the lives of those affected by pulmonary hypertension.
