Mobility: Employees may move alone,
but more often than not, they bring with
them partners, spouses, and/or children.
What types of assistance are necessary to
ensure that the impact of a relocation on
a family does not negatively impact the
employee experience?

Brezosky: As mobility professionals, one of the
most important things we can do is recognize
that our programs were designed to support
" traditional families, " which were so much more
common 20 years ago than they are today. If it's
truly our goal to support employees and their
families with getting settled quickly so that they
can focus on one another, their new lives, and
of course, their jobs, then we need to be openminded and inclusive about how we view and support relocating employees and their families. This
can create other challenges-in particular with
immigration and tax-where a parent or same-sex
domestic partner may not qualify as a dependent.
In these instances, it's crucial to explore creative
alternatives, such as student visas or tourist visas,
and do whatever we can to show employees we
recognize and embrace their family members,
empathize with their challenges, and are here to
support them.
Bui: Creating programs that recognize and are
genuinely available to help the family transition
are essential. Just as we calculate up for additional
family members, we should start thinking of the
more casual benefits that could be added, which
are low-cost but high-impact to the family. A
more thoughtful approach to common challenges
they might encounter could help them assimilate
faster; these could be discovered through one-onone interviews with those who have already been
through the process.
Kiepura: Before speaking with an employee
for the first time, I typically prepare myself by
knowing if a country recognizes partnerships
rather than marriage, if a country is accepting
of the LGBTQ+ community and other cultural dynamics, and if the spouse or partner
can obtain work authorization, medical care,
benefits, and pay. Leading with this information gives the employee ways to further the
conversation about their relocation at home. I

find providing concrete examples from other
expatriates' family experiences or being able to
connect employees with an expatriate at that
location helps. After the initial discussion, I will
later regroup with the employee, giving them the
opportunity to bring forward any new concerns.
Some employees are more open to discussing
their personal life than others, depending upon
their personality or culture. If the employee is not
comfortable sharing concerns with someone at
the company, they are almost always comfortable
sharing with a vendor. I have been fortunate to have
a great network of vendors who know enough to
raise any potential issues, which allows us to get in
front of problems before they occur, or at least come
prepared with solutions to problems.
Woods: I think housing, schooling, and personal
security remain top priorities. Therefore, destination services assistance and competitive tuition
benefits are extremely critical. Also, some kind of
tailored support for the partner goes a long way. It
might be in the form of a reimbursement for local
social activities, so the partner can create their
own network in the host country. Or companies
can create an employee resource group so expat
families in the same city can network with each
other. I also find it helpful when the relocation
counselors have a direct line of communication
with the partner. Lastly, having a strong corporate security organization that can assist with any
type of crisis that might arise, like home burglaries or kidnappings, will increase the transferees'
