Taiwan
Expats posted to Taiwan find a world of diversity to explore. Case in point: The island of 24 million is
well considered Asia's most LGBTQ+ friendly destination. Same-sex marriage was legalized there in
2019, and the annual Taiwan LGBT Pride march draws an international crowd of 137,000 people to
the capital, Taipei.
As Asia recovers from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan's projected growth for 2021,
driven by strong demand for electronics, is expected to outpace that of its regional neighbors. Expats
working in Taiwan-based companies must get a work visa and a work permit. For these employees, con-

text matters. Brief messages are considered rude, and presentations should dive deeply into meaning
and purpose. Loyalty, responsibility, and respect for elders are societal touchstones.
Taipei can be an expensive city, ranked 28th on Mercer's 2020 Cost of Living Survey, but the cost of
living is still significantly cheaper than in other Asian hotspots. Taiwan has tax treaties with 29 countries, including the U.K., China, and Australia, but not the U.S. Resident aliens are subject to progressive
income taxes, up to 40% for those earning US$193,800. A 20% Income Basic Tax is also levied on some
foreign-sourced income.
As houses are rare in Taiwan, most expats live in apartments. With Taiwan's mild winters, central
heating is uncommon, but air conditioning is usually provided for the hot summers. Neighborhoods
range from the quiet, family-friendly Da'an to the bustling, modern Xinyi in the heart of Taipei. Taiwan's
major cities have international schools offering American, Montessori, IB, and other curricula.
All residents, including expats, pay into public health insurance for access to heavily subsidized,
high-quality care. However, public systems don't offer many inpatient services, so expats often get private coverage for care at English-speaking clinics.
Taipei's world-class cuisine is available everywhere, from affordable but upscale restaurants to street
vendors and convenience stores. LGBTQ+ expats can find Taipei's gay social scene in and around the
chic W Taipei, a five-star hotel that welcomes gay patrons year-round for upscale dining and events.
An excellent public transportation system allows easy exploring, but be aware that strict cleanliness
rules can make it an offense to drink water on the subway. However, Taiwan is very safe, including for
LGBTQ+ residents and visitors.
A must for visitors is The Red House, an iconic location where architecture and history intersect.
Taipei's octagonal brick market, built in 1908 and revitalized in the 2000s, is home to the Red House
Tea Shop, art exhibits, a crafts market, boutiques, a business incubator, and themed gay clubs and
bars, indoors and out.
