In addition to helping organizations, we can
also help governments prepare for new scenarios. By sharing the perspective of businesses
operating internationally with government
entities on issues such as taxation and travel
permissions, we can pave the way for regulations
that reduce uncertainty, speed processes, and
support international mobility.

Thoughts on International
Telecommuting
One myth exploded by the COVID-19 outbreak
was that employees must be together in an office
to be productive.
As the world accommodated to social distancing, remote office work necessarily became
the norm, rather than the exception. For many
businesses and employees, it became the preferred
option. It will be interesting to see how much of
the workforce continues to work from home once
this pandemic is controlled.

Beyond Teleconferencing
Countless people around the globe may never
have heard of Zoom before this year. Yet now they
are as familiar with it as they are with Excel and
Outlook. Teleconferencing has kept the business
world going, as well as taking some of the sting
out of separation from friends and family.
Now, after months of interacting exclusively
over screens, employers and employees are starting
to ask questions about the sustainability of remote
work. Without the informal communication that
takes place in lunchrooms and hallways, without the conversations that take place before and
after staff meetings, and without the events that
encourage camaraderie, how do we keep morale
high? How do we share information? How do we
create and sustain trusting relationships? How do
we maintain loyalty?
Gathering in conference rooms still seems a
faraway goal, and technology doesn't hold the
answers to everything. But our innovative spirit
and motivation to support organizations can help
us make the most of the technology at hand.
Those of you who participated in the Global
Workforce Symposium will have experienced a
great example of this.
I, like many of you, rely on conferences such as
GWS to not only expand my knowledge of best
practices, but to meet and continue relationships with
people who can become important resources. I look
to these gatherings as a place to meet new vendors.
I look for partners and potential employees. And I
always look forward to catching up with international
friends whom I may see only once a year.
This year's symposium was virtual. And yet the
electronic platform offered us a stunning array of

As stated above, remote work can bring new
compliance challenges. In addition, the nature of
digital communication can create intercultural
difficulties-even beyond those often encountered
by employees physically working in a foreign environment. Mobility professionals can contribute to
the virtual workplace by creating a playbook on
intercultural education and understanding.
