While global mobility isn't necessarily envisioning
a return to old norms, leaders see hope for a new,
vibrant post-pandemic future

any remember Y2K as a fizzle: The new
millennium felt just like the old one.
But the turn from 2020 to 2021? That was
cause for celebration. Even CEOs, for all their
practicality, see 2021 as the year of hope.
They expressed their optimism-many used that word
specifically-in the January 2021 Fortune/Deloitte CEO
Survey. The survey's first installment, in June 2020, found
that CEOs were balancing crisis management with
future-forward action and digital transformation. In the
October 2020 second installment, they expressed cautious
optimism amid challenges.
By January 2021, the calendar had turned. Most CEOs
said that they had largely recovered from the consequences
of COVID-19. The seeds of restoration they had
planted were bearing fruit. While they weren't envisioning
a return to old norms, they saw hope for a new,
vibrant post-pandemic future.
" Some of that hope was likely encouraged by the
recovery that CEOs were already seeing and reporting
in their revenues and employee levels, " says Benjamin
Finzi, managing director, Deloitte Consulting LLP, and
co-leader of Deloitte's Chief Executive Program. " Some
of it might have been sheer relief that 2020 was over and
a new year was beginning. "
In the U.S., he adds, certain CEOs might have been
anticipating the change in presidential administrations.
Across the board, approvals for emerging vaccines were
also a " key factor " in the CEOs' positive outlook.
In the January 2021 survey, CEOs said:
* Recovery is here or underway. Revenues and employee
levels never declined, already recovered, or will recover to
pre-crisis levels by June 2021, said 7 of 10 CEOs.
* Human issues remain top of mind, even while technology
transforms the workplace. Employee mental health and
well-being will remain a priority after pandemic conditions
lift, reported 98% of CEOs.
* In mobility functions, mental health matters because
change can be energizing but also physically and mentally
stressful, notes Finzi, " so it requires extra attention and
care to optimize for and maximize the energizing parts of
those changes and minimize the negative parts. "
* Diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives remain a
high priority. While most CEOs believe their enterprises
are on track with community engagement and
philanthropy, culture, and board composition, about
half recognize shortfalls in professional development
and advancement.
The resilience that materialized in the pandemic is now
baked into their organizational makeups, agree CEOs.
" Despite the difficult conditions in daily life right now,
CEOs are generally looking to 2021 with optimism, " says
Joe Ucuzoglu, CEO, Deloitte US.
For a reinventing world, the Deloitte/Fortune CEO
surveys offer a glimpse into the mindset of the people
leading economic recovery amid the perfect storm of
pandemic disruption, digital transformation, and social
justice reform. Installment four arrives in late June or
early July.
" CEOs are by definition future-focused, " says Finzi.
" It's their job not only to envision what's next, but to
start bringing that vision to life today. Their actions and
attitudes are therefore an interesting weather vane for the
rest of us. "
And according to the survey, that weather vane points
toward hope.
