The State
of Work
32
Even as technology reshapes the world of work, the pandemic has accelerated
trends that will intensify global talent competition, deepen the digital divide,
and widen the skills gap
BY D.H. COBURN
s secretary-general of the International
Organisation of Employers, the largest
global network of private-sector employers,
with members in 150 countries, Roberto Suárez
Santos has a unique perspective on challenges
facing the post- pandemic global workforce.
Spoiler alert: His outlook on the state of work is
not all sunshine and lollipops.
While Suárez Santos views many changes wrought
by COVID-19 as positive developments for workers
and employers alike, he also sees the ongoing digital
transformation of work deepening the so-called
digital divide and widening the job skills gap.
For the global mobility industry and its clients, the
new world of work will mean intensifi ed competition
for talent, new challenges managing employees who
increasingly will be working remotely, and new tax
and legal implications in the U.S. and abroad related
to work-from-anywhere employees.
A
Work Norms Transformed
No doubt one of the pandemic's lasting impacts
will be its role in accelerating emerging workplace
trends-most notably, the adoption of digital
tools enabling remote work. COVID-19 forever
changed the conversation about when and where
the work of an enterprise gets done.
" For me, the enduring legacy will be the way we
work, " says Suárez Santos. " Not so much remote
work or not remote work, but connected to remote
work is measuring for productivity in a diff erent
manner, being much more focused on what the
objectives are, paying much more attention to
well-being, and considering what's really important
for the worker-employer relationship, which is
well-being, effi ciency, and performance. "
One thing is certain 16 months after the Great
Lockdown began: Remote work is destined to
be a dominant feature of the new state of work.
