Crown polled 162
global mobility
professionals during a
webinar in December
2020 and found that
the greatest number
of respondents (28%)
indicated that longterm
assignment types
were the most critical
to resume; 23% said the
same for short-term
assignments.
a large one, a 20-foot container or a 40-foot one.
Companies are now offering additional options, such
as providing a cash allowance to buy new furniture or
locating a fully furnished home in the new country.
Another example involves offering different
types of moves to accommodate different types
of employees. For instance, Johnson says that
companies might create a " backpack " or " adventure "
move targeted at early-career employees
who might value living in shared housing and
spending their additional budget on nearby travel.
Companies might also opt to give employees
managed cash options, in which the company
takes care of logistically tricky parts of the move,
such as securing container space on a ship, and
provides the employee with a cash lump sum to
spend on strategies that will enrich their stay, such
as additional language training.
Fresh Takes on Recruitment and
Retention
Meanwhile, the prevalence of remote work has
exponentially expanded companies' recruitment
strategies, says Baker, since companies can now
attract and retain talent from wherever they wish.
To win the " war for talent, " Johnson says,
companies will strive to present applicants and
employees with attractive options that will keep
them engaged. Those options could include
offering remote work or demonstrating that
they " walk the talk " when it comes to diversity,
inclusion, and social issues.
Flexibility and choice will likewise be key in
corporate recruitment and retention strategies,
given that perks such as well-stocked kitchens
and massage chairs aren't necessarily as enticing
as work-life balance these days to many workers.
Kathy Burrows, CRP, GMS, SIRVA's director
of global consulting, explains that in the past,
employers generally offered uniform perks that,
while nice to have, weren't necessarily priorities to
all employees; there wasn't necessarily an openness
to-let alone an awareness of-a need to negotiate
with employees. Baker adds that such an approach
has changed to better accommodate the flexibility
and nimbleness needed to move people globally.
" It seems as though right now, the pendulum
has shifted, " explains Burrows. " Employers are
really listening to employees' needs and honoring
that work-life balance request. "
Companies will also be looking at their programs,
policies, and processes with diversity and
inclusion in mind, says Baker.
In particular, the number of women exiting
the workforce during the pandemic has outpaced
the number of men, according to reporting from
CNBC, citing analysis by the National Women's
Law Center. The article quotes NWLC's Vice
President for Education and Workplace Justice,
Emily Martin, stating that many women left to take
care of their children in light of school and day care
closures during the pandemic. Johnson notes that
she's seen more of Crown's clients trying to address
this gap specifically through mobility-recently, one
company initiated conversations between its own
talent and mobility teams and Crown about placing
and retaining more women through international
assignment opportunities.
