The distributed workforce model is the new normal
for global businesses looking for an edge

T

he days of navigating rush-hour traffic to get
to an office, gathering around conference tables
for meetings, and working within arm's length
of colleagues seem like a distant past. In the new normal
of work environments brought on by the COVID-19
pandemic, businesses around the world have pivoted to
online remote work. Remote workers have been a part
of many companies' landscape for years, but others are
managing a distributed workforce for the first time.

THE CAS E F O R A DIST RIBUT ED WORKFORCE

While it took global stay-at-home mandates to achieve
widespread acceptance of distributed work, the value
of remote workers has been documented for years.
In 2015, the Harvard Business Review reported that
remote workers were 13% more productive than others,
and they showed a 50% decrease in turnover. Global
Workplace Analytics, which has been studying remote
work for more than a decade, says that the typical
employer can save an average of $11,000 per half-time
telecommuter per year.

"In fact, when it comes to employee engagement, the
benefits of a distributed workforce can boost not only
productivity and profits but recruitment and retention as well," says Emplify, an employee engagement
improvement firm, in a recent blog.
Talent mobility professionals are very familiar with
both the concept and benefits, particularly as mobility
has increasingly encompassed not just moving workers to job locations, but setting up centers and moving
jobs to where the talent is. Having both remote work
and distributed team options allows companies to
source and deploy the talent and skills they need
more quickly, and more readily scale up or down as
situations demand.
So, while managing a workforce remotely may
have started out of necessity, now the distributed
workforce model may become the norm for global
businesses seeking an edge in the marketplace. If

to jump-start a successful transition to managing
dispersed teams.
