Mobility - May 2020 - Special Covid-19 Edition - 39

Note: Set a default time zone to minimize confusion when scheduling meetings.
Employees can then use the rest of the workday for
individual work; those are also good times for managers to check in one-on-one with workers.

COMMUNICATE, COM M UNICAT E, COMMUN ICAT E

Speaking of checking in with employees, the more
regularly you do it, the more successful your employees will be. Nearly half (46%) of remote workers in
a Harvard Business Review report said that the most
successful managers checked in frequently. Add in
face time via technology with remote workers for
even greater impact, says Charong Chow in a recent
article for SocialChorus.
It's easy to feel isolated and not supported
without the interaction that an office setting brings.
Communication should be more than just discussing
the priority of the week. Use group and individual
video calls to get to know each employee and build a
rapport. Work in some virtual water cooler chitchat.
"Have them engage in small talk, and set time aside
in every meeting and conference call just to catch up
with them. Familiarity goes a long way to building
camaraderie and feeling like part of a true team," says
Eduardo Ulloa with Envision Consulting.

E NCOURAGE E NGAGEM EN T

Dispersed teams should feel a part of the bigger
picture and understand their role in contributing to
the company's mission and goals. "Managers can
use gamification and leaderboards to tap into the
natural competitive nature of the remote workforce,"
suggests Chow. "It encourages engagement through
small-scale goal setting. Team-based goals and competitions assist in creating an atmosphere of collaboration and cooperation."
In addition, give remote workers virtual mechanisms for providing feedback. "Such feedback
loops," she says, "will give remote workers the
sense that they are being heard by management,
and this will strengthen their feelings of engagement with the company."
Ultimately, when successfully managed, a
distributed work model can be a win-win for both
the company and the employee. With 800 remote
workers under her management, Wolpa says, "To
me, the biggest benefit of all is how the distributed
working model creates the space for you to enjoy

Having both remote work
and distributed team
options allows companies
to more quickly source
and deploy the talent and
skills they need, and more
readily scale up or down
as situations demand.
your best life and have more time to do the things
that bring you joy."
The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will be lasting, and they will likely continue to be experienced
differently across industry sectors and geographic
regions as recovery takes hold. As the mobility function becomes more aligned with talent management,
mobility will need to be increasingly flexible-and
able to innovate to fill vacancies with individuals
who may not be in the specific location where the role
is identified as a need. Remote work and distributed
teams will certainly help. M
