the borders of our program constructs. But today,
it is increasingly clear that wellness across multiple
segments-especially mental health-must claim
a higher value. We must increase support, not just
because of this once-in-a-lifetime crisis, but rather
to deepen the way we prepare employees for their
journey as they fulfill their "why" of mobility.
Professional and personal changes are stressful,
and the scars from this pandemic will make investments in wellness more compelling.
With this list of major trends that can be true in all
scenarios, we now need to prepare ourselves and our
customers. Let's consider what some next-normal
best practices might look like:
* We place our customers at the center of what we
do. You might say, "Of course, we always do this!"
but this message is very specific to this disruption.
We must stay close to our customers and understand how their "why of mobility" is disrupted,
because when organizations become more careful
about hiring, they will rely on existing resources
to fulfill requirements. With all of the lessons
we've learned and insights we've gathered, we can
provide mobility and HR consulting expertise that
will help businesses make smarter staffing decisions and determine ways investments in mobility
would allow them to attract higher-valued talent.
Resiliency is key, so think of our role at the table
during discussions on consolidation decisions or
centers of excellence. We can point out the practices
that provided limited agility for the businesses
we support while demonstrating ways to be more
resilient for our customers.
* We build up and apply our business acumen as
we protect the cash flow of our business. We have
to control spend, we need to reduce unnecessary
spending, and we need to provide capability-not
just guidance-so our business leaders, the managers we support, and our HR partners are able to
make smart talent mobility investment decisions.
Corporate mobility leaders are confronted with
multiple solutions and ideas from providers-all
with good intentions, but at the end of the day,
those of us who represent corporate employers
need to be mindful that our role extends beyond
logistics coordination and certainly beyond making
incremental adjustments in the design of our

program. We are relied upon to provide strategic
guidance and data about making talent investment
decisions at the highest level first.
* We continue to serve as first responders-and we
need increased agility. If there is one thing this
pandemic has shown, it's that swift decision-making, redirecting with purpose and speed, flexibility
with our traditional norms, and ability to build
compelling business cases are all rising in importance. We find inspiration from and operate like
first responders as we pay attention to where we
are needed. We keep adjusting the present, so a situation doesn't get more complex and costly. If we
chase every opportunity to improve, we may fall
behind-and if we fail to show up for the important moments, our absence leads to lost partnering
opportunities for and with our customers.
* Our bandwidth is our most precious asset.
We need to be disciplined in our practices and
decisions and protect our bandwidth. Recovery
from crisis brings multiple new initiatives and
