Mobility - July 2020 - 21

believe that this initiative should once again be
considered for the future growth of the organization and industry.
Mobility: What do you think the Young
Professionals group of 2030 will look like, and
what aspirations do you have for inspiring the
next generation?
RW: I am confident that the YP40 of 2030 will
continue to be made up of bright, forward-thinking
young professionals who will be positioned to make
an impact on the mobility industry. The group will
include a blend of today's YP40 members and a
whole new set of individuals who are still years
away from entering the workforce. This diverse
group will be ripe for collaboration, and there will
be new ideas, technology, work methods, and services. I believe the young professionals of tomorrow
will play a large part in these industry innovations.
It is my hope that this collaboration not only happens across a diverse group of YP40 members but
continues to expand across the Worldwide ERC®
organization to include various task forces, committees, and presence on the board.
Many of the mobility leaders of tomorrow will
come from our current YP40 population, which provides a remarkable opportunity for those who have
benefited from the first 10 years of YP40 to "pay it
forward." I know for myself that the relationships
I have made over the years through my time with
YP40 have been instrumental in my professional
and personal growth. My story is not unique, but
rather it has played out time and time again over
the years for my fellow YP40 members. It is my
hope that the young professionals of today do
not forget the important role YP40 played in their
career and are there to welcome, support, and collaborate with the next generation of mobility young
professionals in 2030 and beyond!
Mobility: Is there something you know now that
you wish you had known 10 years ago?
RW: Every day is an opportunity to learn to pause, if
only for a few moments.
This was advice I was often given by my mentors
early in my career, but through recent events I lived
through-such as the loss of my father in 2018 and

the birth of my twin daughters this past January-
they are all that much more important.
Life is busy for all of us. Being able to "pause"
does not mean that your goals, work, and to-do lists
are not important. Rather, the ability to pause allows
you the time to celebrate your successes, recognize
and analyze your failures, and most importantly, take
some time to live in the moment.
In my father's final months, he continually would
say to my mother and siblings, "Every day is an
opportunity." He would explain that you're given
the chance each day to move the ball down the field
on whatever personal and professional goals you are
working toward. Every day you can do something to
make yourself, your family, your team, and your community better. He was also the first to admit that not
every day is a good one. You will face challenges, you
will be knocked down, you will experience failure.
When faced with these challenges, you need to pick
yourself up, learn from what has occurred, and move
ahead. He would emphasize learning from both the
"good" and "bad" that comes with each day and,
most importantly, to never take the opportunities
presented to you for granted.
Mobility: What's your best piece of advice for new
young professionals entering the field now?
RW: The best advice that I have for a new young
professional entering the field now is to be a lifelong
learner, to listen, and to get involved. We are so lucky
to have so many amazing professionals who make up
our industry and are willing to share their experience
and expertise with others. Soak up the information
that is being shared by others in the industry, whether it is an article in Mobility, a post on social media,
a session at an industry meeting, or a one-on-one
conversation. As you become more comfortable in
your role and understanding of the mobility industry, get involved! Attend events, both in person and
virtually; volunteer for a committee; and engage with
other mobility professionals on virtual forums, such
as LinkedIn or the Worldwide ERC® Community.
The relationships and information you take in from
these interactions will play an important role in your
growth as a mobility professional! M
