HR leaders addressing the impact
of the COVID-19 pandemic and
restoration of their businesses
should prioritize effective use of
blockchain technologies because
they offer direct, secure sharing and
communication of workforce data,
such as health and safety information.
testing, the network offers an open-source, digital
platform on which participants can issue, share, and
verify career credentials.
Blockchain creates new efficiencies through
"eliminating the middleman problem between two
parties that are not connected," says Holger Mueller,
vice president and principal analyst, Constellation
Research. He also authored the Constellation
Research report The Looming Impact of Blockchain on
HR & the Future of Work.
Blockchain offers three key benefits for HR, according to that report: Simplifying trust and identity
management; ensuring provenance of data in areas
including background checks, competencies and certifications, and performance and awards; and applying smart contracts to human capital management.

KEEPING PACE WITH THE GIG
ECONOMY

Blockchain also helps "future-proof" HR functions,
says Mueller. Companies are able to move faster if
they are better equipped to track the performance
metrics of an ever-rising wave of gig workers, freelancers, and consultants.
"As a gig worker, I want to have the independent
punch card ability," says Mueller. "It's got to be tamperproof, so I didn't forge it or fudge it. It should be
legally admissible if someone doesn't pay me for the

work I've done. Gig workers or their gig providers
can use blockchain to be ready for these capabilities."
Blockchain can also build trust and create
efficiencies by aggregating an individual's
work-history details into one verified package, says
Cameron. In one study, 84% of organizations say
they routinely find misrepresentation in résumés.
The traditional processes for confirming, or
debunking, each credential necessitates phone calls
and emails that might not be returned, to organizations that might not exist, and to people who might
not hold the answers.
The gig economy further complicates the credentials hunt with the need to confirm distinct projects
and consultations. As Cameron notes, "credentials"
covers a wide range of milestones, including jobs,
degrees, professional certifications, leadership training, and immunizations.
"In the process of validating all that data, with all
the inaccurate and incomplete information out there,
we're still relying on background check processes that
were in place over 100 years ago," says Cameron.
Blockchain puts credentials confirmation on a
bullet train that accelerates the hiring and assignment
process. Companies quickly onboard top talent when
it becomes available. Prospective hires demonstrate
their readiness by presenting verified summaries of
their work selves. If confirmation lags, employers
