DESTINATION PROFILE: BUENOS AIRES

Housing
Expats enjoy an abundance of high-quality housing
options to suit their circumstances and budgets.
Choices include luxury apartments, economical
studios, shared apartments, and gated-community
villas. Properties come in short-term rentals or
long-term rentals, which are usually unfurnished.
The long-term version can be less costly and usually lasts about two years, but expats might have
difficulty pinning them down, so some people try to
convert short-term contracts to long-term.
Most expats find rental properties and negotiate
leases through rental agents. In all cases, expats are
advised to nail down a secure rate to avoid any surprises due to Argentina's fluctuating economy.
The barrios, or neighborhoods, of Buenos Aires
present a diverse array of lifestyles:
*	 Family-friendly: The peaceful, British-influenced
Belgrano offers parks, sports, cafes, and schools.

The sizeable, pricier Palermo contains a zoo,
botanical gardens, museums, and trendy shops.
In the heart of the city, Caballito offers galleries,
parks, and affordable living. The old warehouses
of the Americanized Puerto Madero have been
converted into trendy apartments walkable to
riverside cafes. Recoleta can be expensive, but life
is peaceful and abounds with Parisian-inspired
restaurants and architecture. The suburb of San
Isidro is a 30-minute train ride from the city, and
cost of living is high.
* Young professionals: Las Cañitas offers a hopping
nightlife in secure surroundings. The touristy Plaza
San Martín teems with history and high-end shopping in the heart of downtown. The traditional San
Telmo feels bohemian, with a bustling social scene.
Villa Crespo is near parks and wooded areas, plus
bars, restaurants, and galleries.

Living
Buenos Aires is demarcated by shopping districts, each
purveying distinctive products. Find exotic foods and
spices-including peanut butter, a rarity for Buenos
Aires-in Belgrano's Chinatown, locally known as
Barrio Chino. Or shop for Argentina's famous leather
goods along Calle Murillo in Villa Crespo.
When it comes to dining, the influx of Venezuelan
refugees is changing Buenos Aires' culinary landscape. Buenos Aires residents can now enjoy the versatile arepa, the Venezuelan national dish, from street
vendors and new restaurants. Vegetarian expats can
also thank a changing cuisine scene for the rising
availability of plant-based dishes and restaurants in
this beef-based economy.

While seeking out that new restaurant, you're
likely to encounter a mural or museum-worthy
graffiti on display on nearly every street in the city.
Buenos Aires is burnishing its reputation as a world
street-art capital. Artists paint scenes with feverish,
colorful abandon, needing only the building owner's permission.
If you're looking for the city's famous nightlife,
the clubs known as boliches or the milongas tango
dance halls start late and pound away until dawn.
A typical Saturday night gets going around 1 a.m.
Sunday-great for night owls but a test of endurance for others.
