Tips and advice from the global talent mobility community

Three Technology Questions
Every Talent Mobility
Professional Should Ask
By Ron Dunlap

Technology is in every aspect of our lives: Alexa
manages everything from our schedules to our
shopping lists; a quick Google search takes us right
to the answer in milliseconds; and virtual reality
allows us to enter new worlds from the comfort
and safety of our living rooms.
Technology has also transformed how we work,
especially as mobility professionals. With global
companies continuing to expand and enter new
markets, mobility professionals are tasked with
providing exceptional relocation experiences-a
complicated undertaking when you consider the
variety of assignments, logistics in getting mobile
talent from point A to point B, and country-
by-country regulations to navigate.
Luckily, we can rely on technology to help us.
But it's not just a matter of having technology-
it's about asking the right questions to find the
integrated technology that fits the unique needs
of companies and their assignees:
1.	What level of technology involvement does
your mobility team want? How much time your
mobility team spends on the technology platform
impacts the level of customization and functionality needed. For example, if mobility team members
use the platform every day and have very specific
ways they want things done, the platform should
feel like their own, through customization that
can include specialized reporting functions and
the company's branded look and feel. Or, if your
mobility team typically uses the platform only to
pay close attention to, for example, VIP moves, you
can remove the bells and whistles and just include
widgets that report on these relocations.

2.	How much will assignees engage with the
technology? Assignees' visibility and amount
of control over technology helps shape their
experience and level of satisfaction. Self-guided
lump-sum assignees, for example, will use the
platform often in coordinating their relocation, so
consider a system that can add resources to help
make the relocation process smoother. On the
other hand, executives with managed concierge
services will likely spend less time in the platform and therefore won't need as many modules
or widgets. Simply put, the assignees' technology
platform should reflect how involved they are in
the relocation process.
3.	What reporting functions and APIs (application programming interfaces) do you want-or
need-combined with those of external vendors?
Combining internal and external functions-such
as HRIS, payroll, immigration, tax, and more-can
activate the best relocation experiences and simplify an often complicated process. Consider your
resources and capabilities to determine whether
this route is the solution to your needs.
Technology solutions customized for each company and assignee are key for mobility professionals
to provide exceptional experiences. Make sure you're
asking yourself and your relocation management
company how technology can better fit your needs
and help mobility be a strategic function versus a
tactical to-do. M
