PERCEPTIONS

A Brighter Future Starts With Bold Innovation

I

t's often said that innovation arises from adversity. If that's true, our industry
has bright times ahead.
We all know the COVID-19 pandemic has caused massive economic disruption, grinding mobility to a halt. While we've rapidly learned a great deal
about the risks of the virus, experts disagree about how to reopen our economies, travel restrictions remain fluid, and the impact on the real estate market
is uncertain. The unjust death of George Floyd-which sparked protests not
only in the U.S. but in cities around the world-is demanding that we change our approach to
diversity and inclusion, something our industry was discussing even before this tipping point.
And, regardless of political views, we can all agree that the U.S. elections this November add
another layer of uncertainty in these challenging times, particularly with regard to the future of
immigration policy.
So, how will our industry rise to these challenges? Let's look at what we know. We know
that all the reasons employers move employees-from skill shortages and knowledge transfer
to the need to attract, develop, and retain an inclusive talent pool-remain critical to business
success. We know that changes in business plans and global supply chains require mobility
professionals to be strategic partners. We know that mobility professionals must ensure the
physical safety of future moves and the mental well-being of transferees and families. We know
that mobility professionals are under pressure to reduce costs and adopt technology. Finally,
we know that to rise to these challenges, mobility professionals must take the time to educate
themselves and network with peers. This is where Worldwide ERC® steps in.
Like you, we are innovating, too. Clearly, at least for a time, we cannot bring our community
together in large gatherings like our Global Workforce Symposium. Yet sharing ideas, inspiring
creative thinking, learning new skills, and connecting with and growing our communities are
more important than ever. The same confluence of events forcing change for our members is
requiring bold action from us.
So, using leading-edge technology, we are creating an entirely new event experience that will
bring even more of us together for a longer, richer interaction, while removing physical-space
and geographical constraints. This monthlong event will feature sessions focused on various
regions around the world, education tracks for our diverse industry segments, and enhanced
networking opportunities.
Innovations such as these are laying the foundation for a bright future after this crisis has
passed, characterized by a broader menu of mobility options, greater capacity for safe and compliant travel, and new ways for Worldwide ERC® to serve our membership. I'm excited by the
possibilities, and I think you should be, too.
