Upskilling, which basically means teaching an employee new skills, is a buzzword
that has become an important part of the corporate world in recent years. That's
because many workers must continue to learn if they are to survive in workplaces
that have been revolutionized by rapidly evolving technologies, including robotics
and artificial intelligence.

There are four different types of learning styles in the workplace. They are
"The Student" (visual and verbal learners); "The Independent" (visual and
nonverbal learners); "The Conversationalist" (auditory and verbal learners);
and "The Hands-On Learner" (tactile and kinesthetic).

Swedish workers whose jobs are threatened by advances in technology
have an excellent chance of quickly landing another job as good as their old
one. Sweden retrains workers in skills that are still in demand through a
network of job security councils that are operated jointly by industries and
unions. Also, workers who are unemployed while learning new skills are
kept afloat by a social safety net that includes generous jobless benefits.

The U.S. government has pinpointed the country's community colleges as
an essential element in the drive to retrain workers, especially those in
the manufacturing sector, who have lost their jobs because of automation
and foreign trade. About 34% of the roughly $114 billion the government
spends each year on workforce development and education goes to higher
education, with most of that aimed at two-year colleges.

Amazon, the online retailing behemoth, this year announced an ambitious plan to
invest more than $700 million in 100,000 of its employees in the U.S., so they can
move into skilled technical and nontechnical jobs. Among other initiatives, the
company plans to do this through its Amazon Technical Academy, which focuses
on skilled employees who are able to transition into software and engineering
careers; its Associate2Tech program, which trains fulfillment center associates to
take technical roles; and its Machine Learning University, which helps those with
a tech background to move to machine learning.

According to a survey conducted by Coursera, an online learning platform founded
by a pair of Stanford University professors, European companies generally believe
it's more important to invest in the development of their executives than in hiring
new talent. Those who responded to the survey said corporate learning is the top
investment their companies can make to improve business outcomes.
