Mobility Matters
Interesting, challenging, and surprising stats and finds around the globe
By Jon Ferguson

Germany is seen as a model for workforce development because of
its apprenticeship programs, which combine on-the-job experience
with classroom training. Its programs traditionally focused on the
country's manufacturing sector, but it has expanded apprenticeship
training to include many so-called middle-skills positions, from
nurses' aides and mechanics to bookkeepers and child care workers.

Latin America regularly shows up in reports that indicate that
the region suffers from a severe skills gap in its workers,
meaning industries there are having trouble finding employees
with the right training for jobs that embrace intelligent
technologies. However, although a survey of executives in
Brazil showed that 60% of them believe a skills gap is their
top workplace issue, just 1% say they are planning significant
increases to their investments in training and skill-building.

According to research conducted by Groupon, almost a third
of workers in the U.K. have taken steps to improve their skills
in an increasingly challenging work environment. About 39%
said they would consider taking online courses to improve
their skills. The next-most-popular options were university
courses taken in a classroom (18%) and night school (12%).

A report by the OECD says that few countries are taking the
necessary steps to ensure lifelong learning and help workers learn
new skills so they can thrive in an increasingly digital workplace.
Those devoted to continued learning include Belgium, Denmark,
Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The report says South Korea and
Japan have the potential to perform well in this area but must
ensure that older workers are not left behind. Also, it says workers
in Chile, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, and Turkey lack the skills needed
to flourish in the digital world, and current training systems are not
sufficiently developed to enable them to improve their skills.
