Your first agile
project might be to
figure out how your
organization can
improve leveraging
the latest platforms.

buzzword, and many are happy to repeat the phrase
without the pain of changing the way they manage
their organizations. But organizations that are successful in navigating these changes will likely be the
innovators who have greater employee engagement,
achieve closer collaboration with customers, and
build better solutions.
For smaller organizations and most mobility suppliers, the barriers to agile are much lower. I suspect
virtually every supplier in our industry could adapt and
embrace an agile mindset to improve their innovation
and speed. Here are five things I recommend mobility
leaders do to create a more agile environment.
1. Create an agile mindset, and communicate your
goals. When reading about agile HR, it became
clear that a mindset change at the executive level
was critical to organizational success. Without
understanding why agile is important to your
organization, your team isn't likely to embrace
the change. Similarly, without understanding the
goals of the specific project, your team isn't going
to understand what to solve. Identify your goal,
create an objective, and define the key results you
expect. A clear vision from the top and ongoing
sponsorship will go a long way.
2. Just do it. Start by finding a good project manager
who can be an agile thought leader. Encourage
them to read, learn, and embed an agile process in
the project assigned to them. State that it is your
intent to extend this practice across the organization. Support them with the right resources

to be successful, leveraging external freelancers
where appropriate. Be careful enrolling full-time
overallocated staff members into the tribe, as it's
challenging enough to move projects forward
with dedicated team members. Reprioritization
may be necessary if employees are expected to
continue doing their "day jobs."
3. Collaborate with your customers. Does your
organization have a product manager? You
probably should. Product managers thrive by
working with your customers to understand
their needs, validate problems, and help you
build better solutions. They connect the experience, the technology, and the business needs
to design great solutions for all stakeholders
involved. Product managers ask great questions
and listen to get the information needed. Having
a product manager as part of your team will
likely jump-start your agility. Do yourself a favor
and research "product management" to learn
best practices. The Silicon Valley Product Group
blog (svpg.com) is a great place to start. And if
you don't have a product manager and aren't
willing to hire one, adopt a customer-focused
mindset and instill it in your team.
4. Leverage technology. Videoconferencing,
instant messaging, and team task management
systems are changing the way people work,
and it is irresponsible not to evaluate how
these tools can help your organization. In fact,
your first agile project might be to figure out
