lobal mobility transformation continues
to be driven by changing and significant
economic and geopolitical dynamics.
What's on the horizon? In its eighth
global mobility survey, "ReVISION:
Mobility Through the Looking Glass," Santa Fe
Relocation explored global mobility trends, with a
focus on talent and transformation. We partnered
with London- and New York-based market research
company Savanta to survey 703 professionals
responsible for global mobility programs across 35
countries, and 53 business leaders from the U.K., the
U.S., France, Denmark, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
To complement this, Santa Fe conducted structured
interviews with four global HR leaders to seek their
additional insights, which are embedded throughout
the research report.
Industry thought leaders and subject matter
experts analyzed the response data to share insights
and what they see as the most significant potential
impact of those findings. The primary goal of the
research and analysis is to enhance employee mobility and for global mobility and HR professionals to
create more value and innovation in support of their
overall organizational development.
2019 continues to be a year of disruption, uncertainty, and consolidation in some sectors, especially
as organizations seek to remain capable and competitive. Global markets are also changing, and an
increase in interregional activity is fueled by growth
in domestic markets such as China, India, and the
U.S. Reasons cited for this growth are often related to

a trend toward protectionism. However, the reality
is that the impact of artificial intelligence, technological innovation, and decreasing economic reliance
on manufacturing in low-economic labor areas are
game-changing factors.
These global factors directly affect employee
mobility and HR professionals, as they are at the front
line of managing business expectations and balancing
employee engagement, compliance, and governance.
There will be continued emphasis on evolving policies, finding ways to reduce costs, and optimizing
employee mobility programs. With an increasingly
diverse, multigenerational workforce and mounting pressures to attract and retain talent, employee
mobility teams are increasingly expected to make a
more strategic contribution to talent planning in the
supply/demand requirements in a rapidly shifting
business landscape.
What needs to change structurally, including
employee mobility teams' future roles and value
contributions, is a constantly moving target. There
are new talent demands, new locations, and mergers
and reorganizations. In addition, it is imperative to
track "virtual" assignees who may be unaware of the
compliance risks they create. For example, knowing
when and why a business traveler may no longer
qualify as a business traveler is crucial to compliance.
Those who keep up on immigration and tax regulations may know-but what about the hundreds,
or perhaps thousands, of employees undertaking
business travel-are they in the know? Who manages
this, who is accountable, and who is responsible?
