employee-initiated one-way relocations. Our research
also found that a trend toward one-way permanent
transfers, both company- and employee-initiated,
could be more aligned with the preferences of millennial and Generation Z employees than traditional
assignments. These generations are known to be more
likely to seek new experiences abroad and less likely to
want to stay tied to one country. Organizations that are
agile and flexible enough to facilitate this will have a
competitive advantage in attracting this future talent.
Increases in self-initiated moves may suggest a
greater desire on the part of employees to manage their
career destinies. Possibly in tension with that, however,
is the imperative for organizations to work harder at
"loving their employees." By "love them," we mean
that organizations will have to work much harder to
provide duty of care for their employees, especially
those who undertake substantial international travel.
This is why mobility leaders need to recognize the
opportunities ahead to significantly influence the
levels of support given to talented employees and offer
insightful analytics and advisory support to leadership
to optimize talent deployment.
While we found that the focus on business
travelers and the associated compliance risks has
improved, the longer-term impact on the health and
well-being of employees should not be overlooked.
Far from being glamorous, business travel can put
significant stress on employees and their families.

focus, strong business
alignment, and a nimble,
strategic approach.
This is likely to drive another priority over the
next decade: enabling a strong work-life balance to
sustain good mental and physical health. For many
organizations, enabling work-life balance will require
clarity of purpose and emotional intelligence in how
best to communicate and engage with all levels of the
organization. This increases the need for team-based
collaboration rather than functional and business silos.
Figure 3 also highlights that, for the first time, the
use of short-term assignments (70%) has overtaken
strategic long-term assignments (63%) and business
travelers (65%). Despite this, we also found that
expected growth of strategic long-term assignments
is higher than it was last year. This suggests that
organizations have likely increased their use of
segmented policies, allowing them to make better
