choices about assignment type, rather than moving away completely from strategic assignments.
Flexible solutions are required, and employee
mobility teams need to help lead and identify these
solutions for their respective businesses.
There is no suggestion or evidence that traditional
expatriation will disappear for a variety of business
and talent reasons. Increasingly, organizations are
focusing on tiered approaches to assignment or
transfer support, with full strategic models and more
creative ways to support less complex packages.
Organizations and employees will continue to
recognize that-given the difficulty in "guaranteeing"
a return to the home country, business ambiguity,
and the rapid change brought on by technological
advancement-there are likely to be more one-way
relocations. This may result in a series of these types
of moves based on the employee's career trajectory and organizational requirements. The success
of one-way transfers in lieu of assignments is also
uniquely dependent on a company's culture and the
employees' trust in their career path in the organization. International work arrangements become the
mindset, not a one-time period of working outside of
the employee's home-base country.

TRANSFORMATION: REIMAGING THE
GLOBAL MOBILITY PROFESSION

The "organizational deal" is evolving, and the mantra
now is employability, capability, and competitiveness, against a continuing landscape of uncertainty,
rapid technological advancement, and new markets
and opportunities. To attract and engage scarce
talent, organizations must now adopt a more holistic
approach to interacting with existing and potential
talent to offer attractive total employee experiences

that reflect what employees want, when they want it.
Companies must also adapt policies, processes, and
rules to reflect a different period of economic stability
and generational expectations.
The survey findings reinforce the changing mobility landscape, which poses both opportunities and
threats for organizations. The integration of talent,
mobility, and risk-as well as the ability to use data
analytics-must be optimized to create a competitive
advantage. Organizations need to be planning ahead
to stay in front of these shifts and to create the right
policies in place as they are needed.
There is an opportunity to further educate internal
and external stakeholders so that they better understand not only the current roles of mobility professionals, but also the potential future contribution that
mobility can make to organizational changes and
business growth. M
