Permits

Expats wishing to live in the Netherlands must
obtain a work permit and, for stays exceeding 90
days, a residence permit. Specialized residence
permits include:
* Intra Corporate Transferees (under EU Directive
2014/66), for those transferred to a Netherlands
branch from a company established outside the
European Union.
* Highly skilled migrant, for those working in highlevel positions or as a lecturer, trainee doctor, or
scientific researcher.
* The European blue card, for those working in
highly skilled positions within the EU.
* The standard "work in paid employment" resident permit applies to those working on international projects or under other specific conditions.
Citizens of EU/EEA countries do not need
residence permits, but most expats must register
with their municipalities. All residents, regardless of
home country, receive a citizen service number-the
burgerservicenummer, or BSN-with the municipal

Expats should be sure to take along a legalized
and translated birth certificate, which must be produced when registering with the Municipal Personal
Records Database in the municipality of residence.
For non-EU partners or spouses, the expat
assigned a job in the Netherlands becomes the
partner's recognized sponsor. Four conditions
must be met: The partnership must be legal or
exclusive, the pair must confirm they will live
together in the Netherlands, the expat partner
must have sufficient income for independent
living, and a request must be filed with the
Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND).
The qualifying spouse or partner will be granted a
residence permit that allows work under the same
conditions granted through the expat's permit.
Pregnant women are entitled to four to six
weeks of paid leave before childbirth and at
least 10 after. Salary reimbursement is capped
at €174.64 a day. For women who earn more,
employers may make up the difference but aren't
required to. Partners are entitled to one week
of paid leave and five weeks of unpaid leave,
although they can claim unemployment benefits
for up to 70% of salary.
