Last Word A Good Friend Passing I was so saddened to learn that on September 2, 2009, our good friend and industry leader, Lynn Weas, RRP, lost his courageous battle with cancer. Lynn passed away in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 67. Although Lynn’s life was far too short—he had so much he still wanted to accomplish—we were lucky to have had him in our world. Howard Nusbaum, RRP Lynn Weas, RRP Along the way, he successfully mentored dozens of others around the industry to work toward similar accomplishments of their own. The number of resort professionals who were products of his teaching and mentoring is astounding, as was his ability to bring out the best in others. Lynn has left us a rich legacy in his passionate leadership of ARDA-ROC as its chairman for the past decade. Under his strong volunteer leadership, ARDA-ROC grew to become the most powerful advocacy organization for timeshare owners and their home owners associations. Today, ARDA-ROC, thanks in part to Lynn’s stewardship, is a respected organization with great influence, advocating on behalf of timeshare owners in Washington, D.C., state capitals, and tourist destinations around the country. Lynn was a tireless believer in timeshare as a product that greatly enriched owners, for he understood it as a unique class of real estate to meet so many different vacationers’ needs. Lynn rightfully believed that through the home owners associations, ARDA-ROC could be that collective voice of individual timeshare owners, providing the ability to raise the volume on that voice and “strength in numbers.“ The beauty of ARDA-ROC is that by everyone giving a few dollars, we are able to save individual timeshare consumers thousands of dollars in unfair taxes and fees,” was one of Weas’s mantras. Thanks to his vision and leadership, we (ARDA-ROC) were able to move mountains on behalf of timeshare owners and continue to do so today. During Lynn’s tenure as chair, the coalition grew from less than $1 million to more than $4 million annually. Lynn Weas was tireless in his commitment to ARDA-ROC, but most of all, he kept his compass set on what was right for timeshare consumers. With his advice and counsel, ARDA-ROC undertook valiant and successful battles, defeating onerous taxes unfairly levied on timeshare owners and even defeating ballot initiatives when the odds were against us. Sometimes I think he was able to will us to victory with his steely resolve and unflappable commitment for what was right for HOAs. Lynn was also a champion of good resort operations education within ARDA with his work to support regional meetings and best practices for HOAs. He oversaw ARDA’s Resort Operations Council and was instrumental in the evolution of the ARDA Rockies Regional meeting. Those who knew him learned not to challenge his commitment and resolve to do what needed to be done; however, everyone who knew him also saw how open he was to understanding their position as well. That ability to balance will and openness was the key to his success as a leader. Beyond his work with ARDA, he was president/CEO of Resort Advisory Group, Inc., and managing director of the Christie Lodge Owners Association in Avon, Colorado, where he personally took a failed financial development and turned it into a model of a solid, wellrun resort development. And, along the way, he successfully mentored dozens of others around the industry to work toward similar accomplishments of their own. The number of resort professionals who were products of his teaching and mentoring is astounding, as was his ability to bring out the best in others. I know I speak for the entire ARDAROC Executive Committee, as well as his many ARDA friends, when I express our sincere appreciation for his life’s work. He leaves behind a devoted wife, Dr. Jane Hicks, a son, Tobias “Toby” Weas, and a daughter, Margaret “Molly, as well as grandchildren and hundreds of friends. We will miss him greatly but we should take comfort in the warmth that will always emanate from the great beacon of light that was Lynn Weas. D Howard C.
