In the Eastern part of the United States, 26 percent of people said recycling took too much effort, compared to 8 percent of people that felt the same way in the West. Convenience and access appears to be key issues, as 13 percent of people living in the West said they did not recycle because the apartment where they lived did not provide recycle bins. Another interesting fact from the Harris poll is that more plastic gets recycled than glass, but aluminum and paper are the items most often recycled. Of those surveyed, 57 percent recycled plastic, 54 recycled glass, while 67 recycled aluminum and 59 paper. Cardboard was among the least recycled material, with just three percent of people placing cardboard in their recycling bins. Copper Wire (83) WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? The good news is that recycling PET is proﬁtable, has many uses, and is in high demand. With those facts in hand, it’s clear that the United States could and should be doing a better job at participating in recycling efforts, and that the success of these efforts, in turn, will help lay the groundwork for necessary infrastructure investments in the future.
