Diversity in Engineering:
A Student Perspective
Six U of T Engineering undergraduates discuss current trends in engineering
education and employment - and why they think visibility matters

he face of u of T Engineering has changed
a lot over the last decade: the percentage of
women in the Faculty's incoming undergraduate
class has doubled to more than 40 per cent, and
the percentage of women professors has also
doubled to more than 20 per cent. one in four
undergraduate students now hail from outside of
Canada; among graduate students, that number is
one in three.
Six current U of T Engineering undergraduate
students - Joana Azubalis, Chandini
Chandrabalan, Oluwatobi Edun, Marie Floryan,
Balthazar Crane and Samantha Stuart - sat down
to discuss the role diversity plays in fostering an
enriching educational environment, their personal
experiences both at school and in the workplace,
as well as the trends that will shape the future of
the profession.

whY DID You choosE to stuDY ENGINEERING at u of t?
chaNDRaBalaN: When i was in Grade 12 i
came to the Girls leadership Experience in
Engineering (GLEE) at U of T Engineering. I
remember hearing from a panel of women CEos
who were leaders in their industry, all of whom
had engineering backgrounds. Engineers are not
often portrayed in the media, so it made a big
difference to be able to see an instance of someone i could imagine myself to be.
stuaRt: my dad is an engineer. Because i loved math and science, he
encouraged me to try it out as well. When i came to u of T over march
Break, i absolutely fell in love with one of the research groups that was
commercializing their work on organic light emitting diodes. it was
like holding a giant piece of flexible light. i knew i wanted to be part
of something big and disruptive like that.
