Supreme President Meets Cypriot President at EOKA
Commemoration Event
Supreme President John W. Galanis met briefly with President of the Republic of
Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades at a gala to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the EOKA
(National Organization of Cypriot Struggle) uprising, which would eventually lead to
Cypriot independence from Great Britain in 1960.
President Anastasiades served as the keynote speaker for the gala, which was
held Sept. 20, 2015, in Chicago.
"We were proud to have a strong showing of AHEPA family members from
the Midwest in support of this important celebration," Galanis said. "I appreciated the opportunity to convey AHEPA's warm regards and greetings to President
Anastasiades, who also took time to greet our AHEPA family members in attendance. I also congratulate the organizers of the gala, which was a great success."
A proclamation to mark EOKA's anniversary from the Illinois Secretary of
State was read. The Cypriot American Society of Greater Chicago organized the
Supreme President Galanis with President
event. Several past supreme and current district and chapter officers accompanied Anastasiades and PSEKA President and Ahepan
Philip Christopher.

Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter presented Greek American Specialist
Alek Skarlatos and his two friends, Airman First Class Spencer Stone and
Anthony Salder, with awards for heroism and valor when they subdued a
heavily-armed terrorist gunman on a Paris-bound train in August. AHEPA
Executive Director Basil Mossaidis attended the Sept. 17, 2015 ceremony
held at The Pentagon and conveyed the appreciation, gratitude, and pride
of the American Hellenic community to Skarlatos, his family, and friends.

Cantrell who was crowned Miss America 2016,
Sept. 13, 2015. Miss Cantrell is the granddaughter of Brother
Stavros G. Andris, an

of Solon Chapter 5,

was named after her
Greek grandmother,
sings in the Greek
Orthodox
church
choir and participates in a Greek Miss America Georgia
Baciliky Betty Cantrell
dance group.
