The film, Precious, was a dark comedy about a 4"-tall girl and a full-sized man’s sexual obsession with her. The comic and fantastic elements in the story were especially attractive to Levine-Heaney, who considers the surreal, storybook-like visuals that Darius Khondji, ASC, AFC crafted for Delicatessen one of his inspirations. The number of visual effects required to create the two drastically different scales was daunting enough, but then another challenge was dropped into the filmmakers’ laps: The college wanted to purchase eight Red Ones and asked the Precious team to test the camera’s workflow. At the time, LevineHeaney was anticipating a Super 16mm shoot and had shot two days of tests. The award honors excellence in student cinematography and is named for a different ASC member each year; this year, it was named for honorary ASC member Burton “Bud” Stone, who died in 2008. College in Ireland with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy, California native Nathan Levine-Heaney found himself working in San Francisco, editing corporate videos. He wasn’t happy. “I just wanted to be a storyteller,” he says. “I studied philosophy because I was curious about storytelling.” He decided to go back to school to study filmmaking, and before long, he was enrolled in the master’s program at Florida State University’s College of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts. “I initially chose to focus on directing, but I discovered that almost everything I liked about
