Adjusting Our Sights
Last month members of ACUHO-I’s executive and foundation boards gathered with central office staff and with consultant Glenn Tecker to refine our association’s strategic plan. During this time, tough questions were posed and insightful comments were made. What made this a beneficial practice was that it asked the association leadership to revisit all the conditions and trends that were present when the initial strategic plan was drafted three years ago. All of us understand the importance of focusing on priorities. The ACUHO-I Strategic Plan is a living document designed to help the association not only to stay focused but also to revisit the plan and check the map, as it were, to make sure there haven’t been any drastic changes in the environment that affect our journey. The plan does not just sit on a shelf collecting dust. The Issues of As one would expect, economic conditions still figured prominently in discussions, though accouNTabIlITy with the understanding that things are getting “better.” Meanwhile, the issues of accountability aND assessmeNT and assessment – which were already considered important – have moved even farther to the – whIch were forefront. As a result, a great deal of conversation focused on determining what information is of the most value to housing professionals and how ACUHO-I can help facilitate the collection and alreaDy dissemination of it. The group looked at the different assessment tools available, how campuses coNsIDereD utilize them, and what constitutes the pressing issues of the day. The discussion and proposed ImporTaNT – have solutions flowed through the conference room. We look forward to sharing with you soon the fruits of that conversation. moveD eveN

When we conclude our strategic planning meetings, I am always fortified by the responses I notice from other board members. There is often a tired smile and a sigh as they prepare to return to their campuses. But there is also a satisfied glow that comes from knowing that good work has been done. Just as you’ve been asked to plan and strategize on your campus, so we do for the association. And just as you receive feedback and advice from a number of sources, so we encourage you to provide feedback to us. Please keep your eyes peeled for more news and information as it becomes available, and don’t hesitate to contact a board member with any questions or concerns you may have.
