Called the Explorer 30/36 (for the size of pipe it can inspect), the device was commissioned by Northeast Gas Association's NYSEARCH R&D organization and designed by InvoDane Engineering. The implement combines sensors, highdefinition cameras, and a laser probe to look for dents, cracks, and corrosion. The line can remain in service during inspection. The Explorer series can inspect pipelines that are unpiggable by conventional tools. Traditional pigs are propelled by gas in the line; this device runs on battery power and is controlled wirelessly. It's intended for pipelines with limited flow, plug valves, sharp bends, or other restrictions. Other devices in the Explorer series have been in use since 2010.
