CPME Update Ad Hoc Advisory Committee Revisions The Bylaws of the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME) mandate that publications produced by the council are to be reviewed by an ad hoc advisory committee six years following adoption of revisions resulting from the previous ad hoc advisory committee review. The documents related to continuing education, CPME 720, Standards, Requirements, and Guidelines for Approval of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine, and CPME 730, Procedures for Approval of Continuing Education in Podiatric Medicine, were adopted in 2005. Therefore, at its October 2011 meeting, the council appointed the next ad hoc advisory committee, which held its first meeting in January. The committee is charged with recommending to CPME revisions in standards subject to review by the continuing education community of interest and for final approval by the council. The council and its ad hoc committees are guided by the following principles: Laura Beer-Caulfield; Camp Hill, PA— CEC member, continuing education sponsor representative Roy Corbin, DPM; Bangor, ME— Federation of Podiatric Medical Boards representative Michael Davis; Camp Hill, PA— American Society of Podiatric Executives representative Kelly Gillroy, DPM; Glendale, AZ— continuing education sponsor representative Vanessa Ross; Des Moines, IA— CEC member, continuing education sponsor representative The agenda for the committee’s first meeting included review and analysis of a survey that was completed by more than 45 percent of the profession’s approximately 110 directors and administrators of continuing education sponsors. The survey responses and additional comments provided by the directors and administrators had a significant impact on deliberations by immediately focusing the committee’s attention on increasing the level of standardization, both in the structure of continuing education and the documentation that the council expects from sponsors. The committee also reviewed data regarding the frequency with which each existing requirement has been identified as an area of noncompliance since adoption of the documents in 2005. The committee scheduled its second meeting for June 2012. The council anticipates a year-long process for the review and revision of the standards and procedures, with adoption of the proposed revised documents in October 2012. In the past, the council has provided programs with advance notice (e.g., nine to 12 months) before new standards go into effect. Before adopting any changes to the standards, CPME provides notice to its constituents and other interested parties of the proposed changes. Constituents will be given at least three to four months to comment on the proposed revisions. Comments submitted by constituents in a timely manner will be considered by CPME before final action is taken with respect to the standards. If you have any questions regarding this process, contact Sandy Saylor, CPME assistant director, at 301-591-9292 or sbsaylor@apma.org. n • Leadership. The council will provide thoughtful leadership in formulating issues related to the standards and procedures revision process and developing needed tools and strategies to sustain the value of quality document revision that will lead to advancing podiatric education. Accreditation Best Practices. The council will look to and formulate its process in keeping with recognized best practices of other accrediting agencies. Inclusion. The council will sustain an environment of active consultation with the larger podiatric education community and participating organizations, as well as encourage cooperation and information exchange throughout the podiatric education community. Independence. The council will be an autonomous and informed voice for strengthening the standards for approval. • • • The ad hoc advisory committee members broadly represent the community of interest related to continuing education and have been selected with the belief that they will provide thoughtful analysis and insight into the needed evolution of continuing education and the interests of the profession. The following individuals have accepted appointment to the committee: Lori DeBlasi, DPM (chair); Columbus, OH— CPME member, former member of the Continuing Education Committee (CEC) 42 APMA News March 2012
