Filled with the rich traditions of mountain and gospel music, the city of Calhoun will host the grand opening of New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, a traveling Smithsonian exhibition coming to Georgia on April 14. The Georgia Humanities Council (GHC) is sponsoring the exhibition that helps visitors explore the development of roots music in the United States. New Harmonies is part of the

Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program, which brings exhibits to towns across America through state humanities councils. “New Harmonies provides an occasion for 12 small towns in Georgia to share the history of American music with their community,” says Twiggs County native, GHC board member and New Harmonies Chair Rose Lane Leavell. Wife of renowned keyboardist Chuck Leavell of Rolling Stones fame, she says, “Each Georgia town on the tour has a connection with different original roots music. Hopefully, this tour will create new musical connections for you and your family—with music anything is possible!” “Most of us have stories about roots music in our family or community. Some of my earliest memories were my mother, taking my sister and me, along with her accordion, to conduct Bible school outdoors, along the creek banks of Rabun County. That little accordion in her able hands brought joy to thousands of people,” reminisces Sandra Deal, first lady of Georgia and honorary chair of New Harmonies.
