designing the the Pete Conrad spirit of innovation Challenge Future I n this annual competition named for Apollo 12 astronaut and entrepreneur Charles “Pete” Conrad, teams of high school students design commercially viable, technology-based products that address problems in the fields of aerospace exploration, clean energy, and health and nutrition. After students submit an abstract describing a problem and their proposed solution, 30 to 40 teams in each category are selected as semifinalists, who, mentored by coaches, scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs, prepare and submit full product proposals. On March 29, 2012, 15 finalist teams presented their ideas to a panel of experts at the Spirit of Innovation Summit at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California. Winning teams from each category were named Pete Conrad Scholars and received $5,000 seed money and additional mentoring support to develop their products. Team H2O—Javier and Fabian Fernandez-Han—and a schematic of their design Health and nutrition saltwater to fresh water as you pedal home In developing countries, people often commute miles daily by bicycle. Taking advantage of that energy, two brothers from St. Francis Academy in Conroe, Texas, devised a replacement wheel for bicycles that desalinates saltwater during bicycle use. The wheel acts as a pump to squeeze brackish water through a reverseosmosis membrane, producing 20 gallons of fresh water per hour of pedaling.
