with temporary or permanent vision issues or an older person. Increase
illumination throughout the home by installing high-intensity LEDs with
dimmers to adjust for everyone's needs. You may need to increase the number
of light fixtures throughout the home as well.
"Ensure all areas are adequately lighted, especially for individuals who have
vision challenges like retinopathy, macular degeneration or as a result of a
stroke,"said Paula Kennedy, CMKBD, CLIPP, of Timeless Kitchen Design
in Seattle."They often have parts of their visual field missing because of their
condition. With retinopathy and macular degeneration, light-sensitive parts
of their eyes have been affected, so more light is needed for them to take in
images from the world around them."
Dr. Chabot also suggests adding lights to see in the dark, including nightlights, under-bed illumination that turns on with a motion-sensing switch
and lighting in the toilet area or under the sink. Even lighted door frames can
help someone safely navigate at night.
"Other important areas for nighttime illumination are stairs, both inside
and outside," she said. "Add LED lighting under the nose of each step and
under the bottom of railings or lighting along the sides of stairs. I also recommend every room and all pathways have plug-in flashlights that turn
on automatically when the power goes out and may help prevent someone
from falling."
Kennedy says a common feature in most kitchens is a glossy countertop
that reflects light from the sun or interior lights - especially undercabinet
lights - which causes an afterimage that can lead to a fall or other accident.
She recommends matte or leathered surfaces that allow the material to show
its true beauty and improve safety.

She also suggests that busy patterns should be avoided because of the
difficulty some individuals have processing their environment or seeing
debris. Color contrast should be used to help differentiate adjacent surfaces
and items.
IDENTIFYING COLOR & OTHER ISSUES

Some people also have difficulty distinguishing colors. A younger person may
be able to see 10 million different colors, but as we age colors can wash out.We
see less green, blue and violet - especially true for the half of Americans over
the age of 80 with cataracts. Also, as one in 12 men and one in 255 women
have some degree of color blindness, proper attention to color is necessary to
make a home safer for everyone.
"My dad has trouble because he has red-green color blindness, the most
common type, so asking him about colors is confusing,"said Kennedy."I have
learned to just show him color samples and not use color names. You can try
this with all of your clients, especially those with vision challenges."
For those suffering from seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression
related to a decreased amount of sunlight - especially during shorter days of
winter - Dr. Chabot recommends adding adjustable, bright lighting with
significant blue or green colors that are closest to natural light to help regulate
circadian rhythms.
Add a lighting specialist to your professional team, and when necessary add
vision and medical experts.Their combined advice and knowledge of needs,
designs and products will help you create the best-possible plan to make
the home as accessible, comfortable and safe as possible for your clients and
everyone else who enters their home, now and in the future.
