In 1869, the Austro-Hungarian post office revolutionized global correspondence when it introduced the postcard. With same-day delivery in Europe’s major cities, the postcard became a popular way of spreading the word on world news and personal events. “During the craze, postcards were everywhere, sold in shops dedicated completely to them or by individual vendors on street corners,” explains Leonard A. Lauder, chairman emeritus of the Estée Lauder cosmetics empire. And Lauder would know, having amassed the world’s foremost collection of postcards which, at last count, had 100,000 postcards. Beginning in October, for the first time, 400 of the postcards will be on view in a new exhibit at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, titled “The Postcard Age: Selections from the Leonard A. Lauder Collection.” Benjamin Weiss, the MFA’s Leonard A. Lauder Curator of Visual Culture, worked with co-curator Lynda Klich and Lauder to select each of the postcards, which are arranged by subjects including advertising, politics, art and architecture, aviation, ethnography, inventions and, inevitably, vacation spots — all teased out on tiny pieces of card stock. Underpinning all, says Weiss, is the concept of the postcard as an artistic medium all its own. T H E R I T Z - C A R LT O N M A G A Z I N E 69
