A SS O C I AT I O N N E W S ALWAYS ON CALL AAHIP: Just What the Doctor Ordered Health insurance is the number one benefit requested by qualified employees, but state laws and constant updates can make it difficult for some AAIA member companies to select the correct plan for their business. Endorsed by AAIA, the Automotive Aftermarket Health Insurance Program (AAHIP), a national network of 13 state and regional automotive aftermarket trade associations aiming to simplify companies’ insurance decisions, is a booster shot to help save them time and money. The collaborative AAHIP program prescribes the confidence that businesses have made the best choice for their company and employees. The State Side “We offer medical coverage to our employees, and many of them are in different states,” said Chuck McCourt, president, McCourt Marketing Group/McCourt Industries. “I am very interested in AAHIP since we pay most of the cost.” “Providing options to our members’ health insurance needs is just one of the responsibilities of state associations,” said Randal Ward, president, Automotive Aftermarket Association Southeast (AAAS). “When I talk to potential members, one of the first topics is always the cost of health insurance. Cooperation and communication between the state and national associations in addressing this and many other issues facing the automotive aftermarket business is a natural.” Paging AAHIP, STAT! “Health insurance is the domain of the states,” said Skip Potter, executive director, Chesapeake Automotive Business Association (CABA). “What insurance companies can sell is different in every state, and even the rates are different. AAHIP is perfect example of how state and national aftermarket associations can work together to benefit the industry.” Companies’ decisions to select the correct carrier, choose their most costeffective health policy and design the right employer-employee cost sharing arrangement is complicated. Even the number of carriers depends on the state. In some states, the state association itself has its own agency/ broker to make recommendations, either under contract or partnership. The new AAHIP program allows AAIA members and potential members to request a no-obligation health insurance plan quote for their business. The simple online form is submitted to the appropriate state or regional association, who then puts the member in touch with the appropriate broker or agent that will seek out the best health insurance options based on the company’s unique characteristics. 8 | AFTERMARKET INSIDER | MARCH • APRIL 2010 http://www.aftermarket.org/AAHIP
