It’s not necessarily stereo. The guitar has
a wide dynamic range and a lot of different sound characters coming from different
parts of it; two mics help you capture and
blend, say, the sound at the 12th fret which
will have attack and pluck and string noise,
with the sound at the soundhole or bridge
which will contain a lot more body warmth.
You can pan them slightly apart for a wider
image, but not necessarily hard-panned
left/right for stereo.
9. I have a vocalist who can’t stop
“eating” the mic, and the sound I’m
getting is terrible. How can I get him to
back off enough to fix the problem,
without ruining the vibe of the session?
A pop filter is a great thing here; it should
be in place already, and you can move it
further away from the mic or ask the singer
not to touch it. I’ve put up a dummy microphone in front of the actual recording mic
and had the singer focus on that, sometimes without knowing it’s not being used in
the recording. If you’re in a good iso booth,
an omni mic is also an option for cleaning
up problems in the low end.
10. I’ve heard of boundary microphones but I’m not sure what I’d use
one for. How do they work and where
can they benefit you?
A boundary mic like the Shure Beta 91A
is a mic capsule mounted to a plate or surface which picks up reflections off that
boundary. They’re used throughout recording studios; perhaps the most typical application is inside kick drums, but you can
also use them as room mics, hanging
against a wall, and I’ve even seen them
used on piano lids. It’s a good option for
capturing a different sort of sound, and
because the capsule is so close to the
boundary you don’t have any phase issues.

Making Choices
11. I’ve never miked a guitar amp
before. What’s a good setup to start
with, in terms of mic choice and placement? What benefits do I gain from
multiple mics on one amp?
Guitar amps are fun; you can get a lot
of different sounds using various mics and
techniques. The best starting point is to
mike the cone of a speaker; use a flashlight to look through the grille cloth and
figure out where and how many speakers
you have, and then mount a dynamic mic
(the Shure SM57 is the most famous example) right up against the grille cloth with
the mic pointing straight at the cone—
remember that the cone is the ring of flexible material around the central dust cap
dome, which doesn’t make sound itself
and which sounds hollow if you point the
mic straight at it. Moving the mic between
the center and edge of the cone will give
