joIn nSbe’S jOuRNEY TO mARS! he Space Special Interest Group of the National Society of Black Engineers Alumni Extension is issuing a call for proposals for its Mars Desert Research Station Project (MDRS). This multi-year project will send six-person expeditions of NSBE members to the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station, a Mars-analogue facility located in the Utah desert. Researchers at the NDRS face many of the same constraints as astronauts would face on Mars. More information about MDRS is available at http://www. marssociety.org/MDRS/index.asp. Proposals must include a suggested program of research within one of the following domains: biology field exploration; engineering/technology research; geology field exploration; human factors research; operational strategy investigation; or outpost/habitat/rover architectural design. All proposals are due by 11:59 pm Eastern time on Saturday, May 31, 2008. Early submissions are preferred. All proposals should be submitted in MS Word and be organized into the following sections: 1. Executive Summary 2. Research Description 3. Research Importance 4. Literature Review of Similar Research 5. Experiment Design 6. Data Analysis 7. Publication Plan 8. Optional: Crew Member Application All interested persons are eligible to submit proposals. Only collegiate and Alumni members will be considered for crew assignments. Submit proposals or questions electronically to mars@board.nsbe.org. There are no page-length requirements, but proposals four to 10 pages in length are suggested. Proposals are to use SI units exclusively and shall label all units. English units may not be used, to maintain project commonality with NASA Policy Directive 8010.2E, “Use of the SI (Metric) System of Measurement in NASA Programs.” Conversions to/from Metric units may be performed per National Institute of Standards and www.nsbe.org T Technology conversion factors, found at http://ts.nist.gov/ts/ htdocs/230/235/h4402/appenc.pdf. ■ Notes: All proposals become the property of the NSBE Space SIG. Submissions will be used to help formulate the Mars Desert Research Station project and will drive NSBE expedition design. There is no guarantee that submitted proposals will be incorporated into MDRS expeditions or that submitting applicants will be selected as MDRS crew. All persons will be required to sign liability waivers before assignment to NSBE expedition crews.
