From the Editor space of life Dear Reader, Gertrude Stein famously said of Oakland, California, that there was no “there there.” Not true today. Oakland has not only become one of the hippest, happeningest cities, it even boasts a big metal sculpture of letters that spell THERE. So there. But what makes a spot a real place? We asked that of Southwest Airlines Customers over social media and noodled over the question ourselves. This issue only begins the conversation. For me, the most special places have their own special times as well. Take Santa Fe during the holiday season. (You still have time to book a flight!) Once a year, people gather at the Santa Fe Plaza, the lights go out, and everyone holds a lit candle. A procession led by a man and a woman playing Joseph and Mary (soon-to-be parents of the baby Jesus) recreates the couple’s search for an inn, knocking on doors and singing. Sure, the plaza is worth visiting anytime. But once a year a special spirit comes. There are other, less ambitious ways to transform a place. For instance, rocking chairs seem to be springing up all over the country, turning parks into living rooms. Companies like Southwest are joining in—its Porch in NYC’s Bryant Park is a great spot to have a drink. We all seem to be getting a sense of place. I’m glad. Travel lets us not only check off famous sites but also inhale that unique spirit of place. Check out our list, on page 58, of the most spirited places we’ve found. Plan to visit them.
