What Should I Be Doing
This Month?
OR MOST Pennsylvania hunters, the months preceding May can be the
slowest on the calendar. While they offer chances to be afield, those
opportunities are limited by reduced sunlight and inclement weather. April
brings longer days and trout season, but it is the month of May that holds
the ultimate cure to cabin fever.
May could offer a chance to experiment with new loads on woodchucks in
a farmer’s field. Archery hunters know that in addition to loosening the first
practice arrows of the year, attention must be paid to the weather as a wet
spring or a late frost will determine what food sources to hang a stand over
in October. And for almost a quarter of a million Pennsylvanians, May is a
month to be enjoyed to the fullest with the arrival of spring gobbler season.
As with most seasons, the first few days offer a good opportunity to be
successful. This is especially true for two-year-old birds that tend to be more
vocal and easier to call than older birds. Those opportunities fade quickly and
it doesn’t take long for birds to grow wiser and less vocal due to the increase
in hunting pressure. But the experienced turkey hunter knows not to be deterred by the change in turkey behavior. Those willing to hunt through the
remainder of the month will be in position for an exciting late season hunt,
often involving an older gobbler that has lost his hens and has grown more
susceptible to calling than earlier in the spring.
Turkey hunting can be demanding, both physically and mentally. Gobblers
that consistently fly down in a specific direction will one day go a different
way, sending the hunter scrambling to catch up to a departing bird. Calls
from a box call that produced responses early in the morning can fail to attract even the faintest of attention an hour later. But for all the highs and
lows, spring gobbler season has an irresistible draw. Anyone who has climbed
a mountain under the glow of a full, early-morning moon and heard a mature
gobbler announce his wake-up call in the hollow below, understands the sentiments of Tom Kelly who wrote, “I do not hunt turkeys because I want to, I
hunt them because I have to.”
With the month of May, all of this begins and big game hunting in the woods
of Pennsylvania starts anew.
