The low temperatures during the previous week had varied between 30 and 40 degrees. It seemed a good idea to wear my knee-high ski socks as well as the tops and bottoms of my moisturewicking long underwear to remain comfortable until the sun warmed the morning air. I had sprayed my camo bibs and coat with tick repellent. I slipped into the bibs and pulled my kneehigh camo rubber boots on and snapped the pants cuffs around the boots. The snug cuffs and the tick shield spray would hopefully block any ticks from settling in on my skin. I zipped up my jacket and the adventure was on. The bolt passed through the gobbler's body, skidded and stopped about five corn rows away from the motionless gobbler. It was 10:25, and less than an hour from my nearly ill-fated idea to move elsewhere. In a season when I wasn't sure when I'd be able to hunt, my gobbler was lying 25 yards away, and ready to be tagged and given a ride home. Plus, I had a second spring gobbler tag, which meant I had eight more mornings and the entire two-week, full-day season ahead of me. Maybe I'd continue to look skyward for Orion and Canis as I headed afield on those hunts. An assist from another hunter and his dog just might double my chances of success.
