Rewind Ms. Senior Florida Pageant April 1, 1997 MS. SENIOR FLORIDA PAGEANT IN THE VILLAGES by GARY CORSAIR True beauty doesn’t fade with age. That was obvious when The Villages hosted the Ms. Senior Florida Pageant in April 1997. Bert Parks didn’t emcee, and there was no swimsuit competition, but the event had all the feel of the more famous Miss America Pageant. That feel — an aura of class and refinement — was embodied by 62-year-old Ms. Senior America Frankie Stewart, who spent a week in The Villages promoting the event. “It was a quintessential example of the how seniors, women in particular, continue to be beautiful charming and gracious at any age,” said Villages Entertainment and Special Events Director Barbara Vesco. The elegance of the pageant was certainly JUNE 2008 reflected in the grace and beauty of three residents of The Villages who were among the 15 contestants. “I made nice memories,” said Mary Lehive, who had moved to The Villages the year before. “That’s what is fun about living in The Villages; you can do things you wouldn’t have done anywhere else.” For Mary, it was her first pageant, but she managed to stay relatively calm after a slightly wobbly start. “Everyone came out to root us,” Mary said. “I had everyone supporting me, my neighbors, my friends and my family came down. When I came out to play the piano during the talent portion they were hooting and howling so much that I lost my concentration for a moment. But I recovered quickly.”
