New Products • Batteries RRC Standard Smart Batteries with Optimized Energy Density RRC has three new standard Li-Ion SMBus battery packs RRC2040, RRC2024 and RRC2040. The energy content for two of the battery packs: the RRC2020 and RRC2024, are now optimally rated close to the 100 watt limit that exists in terms of the Dangerous Goods Ordinance. The batteries are SMBus v1.1 compliant and meet the JEITA standards (required for export to Japan). The temperature-dependent load profiles of the batteries increase safety and also lead to a maximized cycle life of the batteries. Used in combination with RRC’s battery chargers, they can be optimized and accelerate charging. By using the impedance track technology, it is not necessary to manually calibrate the battery. The use of cell balancing leads to maximum available capacity and to longer life. The battery packs have comprehensive charge/discharge safety systems as well as passive safety electronics, and worldwide agency certification approvals and international recycling support. HIQAP-GS pack design includes Balqon proprietary Battery Management System (BMS), 5 kW built-in charger and control technology for direct replacement of lead acid battery packs. Global Technology Systems, Inc. Introduces Genius Batteries Contour Energy’s Li/CFx Cells Enhance Battery Performance in Medical Devices Contour Energy Systems, Inc. has introduced its Lithium/ Carbon Fluoride (Li/CFx) primary batteries in medical devices. Contour’s proprietary Fluoronetic fabrication technique combines multi-layered carbon nano-materials with new manufacturing processes to achieve long shelf life and wide temperature operation. Additionally, the Li/CFx series’ patented “tunable cathode” allows the cell’s fundamental properties to be finetuned for optimal energy and power density. Contour’s Li/CFx cells are especially well-suited for medical applications due to their relatively flat discharge profile, low internal resistance and light weight. Key medical applications include drug infusion pumps, neurostimulators, pacemakers, bone-growth stimulators, glucose monitors, defibrillators and other implantable and external devices. Compared to other lithium battery chemistries, Li/CFx typically delivers higher gravimetric energy density, higher volumetric energy density, a wider temperature range, improved shelf life and optimum price/performance. Global Technology Systems, Inc. (GTS) has introduced the Genius Batteries. Genius Batteries are an intelligent solution for simple and efficient battery management. Millions of workers around the globe rely on mobile devices to complete critical tasks and battery management is essential to their success. Until now these workers have had little, if any, insight into the health of their batteries, leading to costly delays and disruptions including mid-shift failures and unnecessary maintenance costs. In-field experience demonstrates that standard batteries are either used beyond their useful life or are discarded with significant life remaining. Genius Batteries deliver a deeper and more accurate measure of a battery’s health without the need for additional equipment. The measure SoH gives users greater confidence that the batteries they rely upon are healthy enough to operate full shift. Each Genius Battery utilizes a built-in LED indicator to inform the user of its SoH at all times. As the battery is used and its health declines, the LED indicator turns yellow, informing the user that they should order a replacement. When the LED turns red, the user knows the battery is no longer reliable and should be replaced. These lights are simple to understand and indicate exactly when to reorder and replace the battery. New Zinc-Air Battery System Surpasses Industry Benchmark for Off-Grid Energy Source Balqon Corp Introduces HIQAP-GS Lithium Battery for Airport Ground Support Equipment Balqon Corp., a developer of electric vehicles, drive systems and lithium battery storage devices, has introduced a low cost, high capacity lithium battery replacement pack for electric powered airport baggage tractors. The new HIQAP-GS series lithium battery pack is available in 48 volt and 80 volt configurations with amp hour (Ah) capacity ranging from 400 Ah to 1,000 Ah, doubling the range of current fleets in operation. QuantumSphere, Inc. has released the MetAir Ranger series for on-demand back-up power in off-grid and emergency applications. QSI’s MetAir Ranger portable power system has received independent validation that it surpasses the industry’s 72-hour emergency preparedness benchmark. The system achieved 108 hours of instantly accessible emergency power. The MetAir Ranger, a 3.2 kilowatt hour battery system weighing less than 25 pounds, yields energy densities of 352 Wh / Kg and costs per kilowatt hour of less than $200. The MetAir portable power systems utilize QSI’s proprietary cathode technology. While one MetAir Ranger system is about the size of a single deep cycle lead acid battery, it is roughly half the weight and has 11 times the equivalent energy per kilogram. It is also designed to accept replaceable power cartridges once the initial system is “air” activated and used. The MetAir Ranger series is essentially a plug and play box of portable energy and requires no external energy sources to stay charged. The MetAir Ranger has an optional 150 watt 110 volt AC inverter with two outlets and a USB charging port. 22 Battery Power • November/December 2012 www.BatteryPowerOnline.com http://www.BatteryPowerOnline.com
