New Products • ICs & Semiconductors Power Management ICs Provide Multi-Channel Operation and Low Quiescent Current in Portable Applications ON Semiconductor has introduced two new power management integrated circuits (PMICs) optimized for battery powered systems such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, GPS systems and other portable electronics. Utilizing the latest power management techniques, the NCP6924 and NCP6914 optimize system efficiency and save battery life. The NCP6924 integrates two high efficiency 800 milliamp (mA), 3 megahertz (MHz) step down DCDC converters and four low dropout (LDO) voltage regulators for a total quiescent current of 105 microamps (µA). The NCP6914 integrates a single high efficiency 800 mA, 3 MHz step down DC/DC converter and four LDO regulators to deliver a low quiescent current of just 72 µA. Featuring five and six voltage rails, both of these devices are perfectly sized to supply power to mixed signal modules such as cameras, or to complement power distribution to an application processor (AP) under minimum supervision. Programming flexibility is offered through a 400 kHz/3.4 MHz I²C interface, which controls power up sequencing, enables and disables output power and controls individual active output discharges. Dynamic Voltage Scaling of the DC/DC converters allows the system to adjust core or IO voltages to load profiles when, for instance, the system goes into sleep mode. In addition, the on-board LDO regulators can be directly supplied by one of the integrated DC/DC converters, considerably reducing overall power losses. The DC/DC converters’ output voltage can be programmed from 0.6 volts (V) to 3.3 V in 12.5 millivolts (mV) steps and LDO regulators from 1.0 V to 3.3 V in 50 mV steps. Dedicated pins and registers for power good and interrupt complete the feature set, providing the necessary supervision to report power failure. The two devices are both offered in 2.45 mm by 2.05 mm and 1.76 mm by 2.05 mm respectively wafer level chip scale packages (WLCSPs) with 0.4 mm pitch. The NCP6924 is priced at $1.85 per unit and NCP6914 is priced at $1.35 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities. and a small, 50 mm2 solution footprint. This combination of features addresses the key requirements for long battery life, small size and design simplicity in notebook PCs and set-top box applications. The SC4530 operates from a 3 V to 30 V supply and provides an adjustable output voltage with output current up to 300 mA. The very-wide input voltage range enables the device to operate from a variety of input sources, including single- or multi-cell batteries, internal system rails and wall adapters. Battery Charging Controller and Power Manager Features Input Maximum Power Point Control Semtech’s 30 V Micropower Buck Regulator Platform Improves Battery Life and Reduces Standby Power Semtech Corp. has launched the first device in its platform of high-efficiency micropower step-down switching regulators. The SC4530 is a 30 V micropower buck regulator that provides light-load efficiency greater than 80 percent at 650 µA output Linear Technology Corp. has introduced the LTC4000-1, a high voltage controller and power manager with input maximum power point control (MPPC) that converts virtually any externally compensated DC/DC power supply into a full-featured battery charger. The LTC4000-1 is capable of driving typical DC/DC converter topologies, including buck, boost, buck-boost, SEPIC, flyback and forward. The device offers precision input current monitoring and charge current monitoring and regulation. It operates across a wide 3 V to 60 V input and output voltage range, compatible with a variety of different input voltage sources, battery stacks and chemistries. The LTC4000-1’s MPPC circuit features an input voltage regulation loop that controls charge current to maintain the input voltage at a programmed level, well suited for solar panels or other high impedance sources. Applications include: high power battery charger systems, high performance portable instruments, battery backup systems, and industrial or military battery-equipped devices. The LTC4000-1 features an intelligent PowerPath topology that preferentially provides power to the system load when input power is limited. The LTC4000-1 controls external PFETs to provide low loss reverse current protection, efficient charging and discharging of the battery, and instant-on operation to ensure that system power is available at plug-in, even with a deeply discharged battery. External sense resistors and precision sensing ensure accurate currents at high efficiency, allowing operation with converters that span the power range from milliwatts to kilowatts. The LTC4000-1’s full-featured controller charges a variety www.BatteryPowerOnline.com 24 Battery Power • November/December 2012 http://www.BatteryPowerOnline.com
